Senegal/sénégal /senegal
Make sure you catch the final leg of the Paris to Dakar rally. The 10,000km race finishes in the Senegalese capital in mid-January. It’s one of the longest, toughest off-road rallies in the world. Over 400 drivers compete in the 17-day race in 4WD cars, quad bikes and motorbikes, which brings them through Mali, Mauritania and Dakar. Only a quarter of them complete the race. Et si vous assitiez à la dernière étape du rallye Paris-Dakar? L’arrivée du rallye de 10 000km est prévue dans la capitale sénégalaise mi-janvier. Visitors wanting to stock up on locally-made souvenirs will find all they need at Douala’s Artisinal Market (Boulevard Ahidjo). The open-air crafts market is located about halfway between the Akwa Palace and the town hall.
Les visiteurs qui désirent rapporter quelques souvenirs de fabrication locale trouveront leur bonheur au marché artisanal de Douala’ (boulevard Ahidjo). Ce marché à ciel ouvert est situé à mi chemin entre le Palace Akwa et la mairie.

If you’re in Luanda, Angola, during February then be prepared for colourful festivities as Carnival comes to town from the 25th to the 28th. Costumed locals parade along the seafront avenue, known as the Marginal, and the surrounding streets are filled with dancing and music.

The ivory coast
It’s not just London that’s home to a well-known St Paul’s Cathedral. Abidjan also has its own version – Cathédrale St-Paul (Boulevard Angoulvant). Designed by the Italian architect Aldo Spiritom, the modern, eye-catching building with beautiful stained glass windows is definitely worth a visit. The bell tower provides a spectacular view over the plateau. Open daily.

Rwanda
While a visit to the Parc National des Volcans to see the endangered mountain gorillas is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Rwanda is also home to another natural treasure. The Parc National Nyungwe Forest in the south of the country is one of the largest protected mountain or highland rainforests in Africa. Home to huge groups of black-and-white colobus monkeys, chimpanzees and baboons, the forest also boasts an astonishing variety of plant and bird species. Stay in Gisakuru or in the comfortable, albeit basic, guesthouse in the park itself. Visit the ORTPN office in Kigali to arrange a trip or check www.nyungwe.org to find out more.
Visiter le Parc National des Volcans pour admirer les espèces menacées des gorilles de montagnes est une opportunité que l’on n’aura qu’une fois dans sa vie, mais le Rwanda possède un autre trésor naturel. Le Parc National de Nyungwe est l’une des plus grandes forêts vierges en Afrique. Refuge de nombreux groupes de singes colobes au pelage noir et blanc, de chimpanzés et de babouins, la forêt abrite aussi une fabuleuse variété de plantes et d’espèces d’oiseaux. A pirogue (a canoe made from a hollow tree trunk) trip through the creeks and mangroves around Banjul is a popular leisure activity for visitors. Look out for the birds and other wildlife lining the riverbanks. Choose between a traditional or motorised pirogue and arrange in advance through a tour agency or, alternatively, liaise directly with a local pirogue operator.
Une balade en pirogue autour de Banjul, dans le bras de la rivière plantée de palétuviers, est un loisir populaire pour les visiteurs. Vous pourrez y admirer les oiseaux, ainsi qu’une faune variée qui peuple les berges de la rivière. Vous pourrez choisir entre une pirogue traditionnelle ou motorisée et arranger à l’avance votre circuit, soit avec un tour opérateur, soit sur place avec les loueurs de pirogue.
Een tocht maken in een pirogue (een kano gemaakt van een uitgeholde boomstam) door de kreken en mangrovebossen rond Banjul is een populaire activiteit voor toeristen. Kwestie van vogels en andere wilde dieren op de oevers te spotten. Kies tussen een pirogue met roeispanen of met een motor. Regel uw tocht vooraf met een reisagent of maak zelf een afspraak met de plaatselijke pirogue-eigenaar.

Kenya / kenya / kenia
If you’re only in Nairobi for a short while and a safari is out of the question, then the AFEW Giraffe Centre (in the suburb of Karen, 10km from the city centre) is home to the endangered Rothschilds giraffe. There’s a platform for feeding which enables you to take a few ‘close up’ snaps.
There’s also the Nairobi National Park (www. kws.org), a protected area close to the city where giraffes, impalas, zebras and rhinos graze against a dramatic skyscraper backdrop in the distance. It’s a surreal experience to say the least.
Si vous êtes à Nairobi pour une courte période et qu’un safari est hors de question, rendez vous au AFEW Giraffe centre (en banlieue à Karen, 10km du centre ville) réserve des girafes Rothschilds, une espèce menacée. Vous pourrez les nourrir depuis une plate-forme surélevée et les approcher de très près pour les photographier.
Il y a aussi le Parc National de Nairobi (www.kws.org), zone protégée près du centre ville, où girafes, impalas, zèbres et rhinocéros paissent sur fond de gratte-ciel, ce qui donne à la scène un aspect théâtral. On peut dire que c’est une expérience surréelle.
Als u maar kort in Nairobi bent en geen tijd hebt voor een safari is er altijd nog het AFEW Giraffe Centre (in de voorstad Karen, 10km van het centrum) waar de bedreigde Rothschilds giraf thuis is. Er is een voederplatform waar u oog in oog komt te staan met de dieren.
Er is ook het Nairobi National Park (www.kws.org), een beschermd gebied dichtbij de stad waar giraffen, impala’s, zebra’s en neushoorns grazen met wolkenkrabbers in de verre achtergrond. Op zijn zachtst gezegd een surreële ervaring.

A popular day trip from Kampala is the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The island is situated in Lake Victoria and boat trips there can be arranged for individuals or groups. Ask your hotel reception or visit www.ngambaisland.org for more information.

Elegant décor and stained glass windows made by a local artist are featured throughout the main dining area and private dining room. Those who want to stop by simply for a drink can do so in the mezzanine bar.
Pour dîner, le Nairobi Tamarind (National Bank Building, Harambee Avenue. Tél: 020 220473) est cité comme le meilleur restaurant de la capitale. Le décor est élégant avec ses grands vitraux créés par un artiste local, visibles dans la salle principale du restaurant ainsi que dans les salles privées. Ceux qui veulent seulement prendre un verre, peuvent se rendre au bar à la mezzanine.

For tasty fish dishes in a bustling atmosphere, the Marché Central (Boulevard Mohammed V) is a must. The basic setting of plastic furniture and tablecloths is complemented by fresh fish cooked in front of you and served with a plate of chopped onion and tomato. Fellow diners include market traders, shoppers and local office workers. While in the area, head to the nearby Rialto Cinema, an art deco theatre constructed in the 1930s. You can still catch a film here.

The great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is 250 this year. His anniversary is being marked by orchestras, opera companies and choirs around the UK. Venice Carnival
The picturesque city of Venice bursts with festivities for two weeks (from 28 January to 8 February) as this celebrated carnival takes over. The city is awash with musicians, revellers, acrobats and theatre troupes as parades fill the streets, squares and theatres and masked balls and gala dinners take place most nights.
