FIRST PERSON

SN cabin crew are at the front line when it comes to ensuring the highest quality of passenger service during your flight. But even they take time off to relax – here cabin crew member Jan Verbeke gives us an insight on the lighter aspects of his job.

What’s the best place you’ve eaten across the long-haul network?

The Tamarind restaurant in Nairobi is really excellent, they have fantastic lobster and seafood – as well as the best dawas (vodka, lime juice and honey) in town.

Where can you find the best markets?

There’s an excellent market in Nairobi – the City Market – for flowers, vegetables, fruit, arts and crafts souvenirs, textiles etc… The sellers can be quite pushy, but it’s great fun to haggle the prices down. On the other side of the continent, the markets in Dakar and Yaoundé are hard to beat.

Where’s the best place for activities – hiking, water sports, animal-watching etc…?

Rafting on the Nile in Uganda is an absolute must – a real adrenalin rush! And here again, Kenya is great too, as the leisure infrastructure is so well developed. The Gambia is also a good spot for water sports.

What’s your favourite stopover?

For me it has to be Dakar, because you can hang out and relax on your downtime.

What’s the strangest thing a passenger has ever tried to bring on board?

Nothing really strange -but sometimes passengers try to smuggle fresh fish on board – which is rarely very successful because the smell is quite strong.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Escape… in a word. Even if you’re working, it’s still great to be able to almost change universes in just a matter of hours. Plus I really enjoy making our passengers feel at home on our flights – it’s nice to be able to make a difference.
