Guy Velge is CEO of Polytra (www.polytra.be), a Belgian company trading in Africa. We put him through a quick-fire round of questions to find out more
What does your company do?
Polytra is a freight forwarder specialising in handling the full transport chain of commodities, such as copper, cobalt concentrates and alloys, from Central Africa to South Africa, Europe, and China. We also specialise in turnkey industrial projects across Africa and in managing the transport of project cargo.
In which African countries does your company operate?
Our head offices are based in Antwerp, but we also have offices in the Democratic Republic of Congo and we operate in Guinea, Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania, Libya, Algeria and Ghana.
What advice would you give on how to facilitate trading with African clients?
As when dealing with all foreign clients, you need to be patient and discuss everything in detail. An excellent follow-up on every project is also important.
What’s your top tip for doing business in Africa?
You need to be prepared to take a few risks.

Que fait votre compagnie?
Polytra est une société de transport de fret international, spécialisée dans la gestion complète de la chaîne des activités liées au transport de matières premières, telles que le cuivre, les concentrés et les alliages de cobalt entre l’Afrique centrale et l’Afrique du Sud, l’Europe et la Chine. Nous nous spécialisons également dans des projets industriels clés en mains sur l’ensemble du continent africain et dans la gestion logistique des projets cargo
Dans quels pays d’Afrique votre compagnie développet-elle ses activités?
Notre maison mère est basée à Anvers, mais nous avons également des bureaux dans la République Démocratique du Congo et nous sommes opérationnels en Guinée, Zambie, Afrique du Sud,Tanzanie, Libye, Algérie et au Ghana.
Quel conseil donneriez-vous à ceux qui voudraient établir des relations commerciales avec l’Afrique?
Les mêmes qu’à ceux qui ont des relations commerciales avec n’importe quels clients étrangers, vous devez faire preuve de patience et passer en revue tous les détails. Un bon suivi sur chaque projet s’avère également essentiel.

Pro€invest
If you’re interested in improving the business environment in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, you should register with Pro€Invest. Managed by the Centre for the Development of Enterprise (CDE), the programme was set up in 2002 to promote investment, trade and technology transfer between EU and ACP countries.
The programme has an overall budget of €110 million for seven years. It supports activities such as improving policies to support the private sector and providing training on the latest information technology, as well as B2B meetings and company missions to and from ACP countries.
Philippe Moudie, the General Secretary of the African and Malagasy Coffee Organisation, says: “Thanks to the financial support of Pro€Invest/CDE, we invited 15 African co-operatives in the coffee sector to come to Europe to meet European coffee roasters, which resulted in a contract worth €1.8 million.” For more information, visit www.proinvest-eu.org www.cde.int

Set in Africa, its films illustrate that without a healthy, diverse and productive environment, our planet and its people will not survive. The foundation has more than 40 years experience of wildlife filmmaking and conservation work in Africa. Plus it has the full support of the Kenya Wildlife Service and Tanzania National Parks, as well as numerous other educational institutions that provide a wide network for distributing the films free of charge.
