THE MAGIC BEHIND BELGIUM’S “MEMORIAL” ATHLETIC EVENT
The Memorial Van Damme - always the highlight of the Belgian athletics year – will be extra special this 25 August, as it marks the prestigious track and field event’s 30th anniversary. The “Memorial”, as Belgians like to call it, is part of the Golden League of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), together with Oslo, Paris, Rome, Zurich and Berlin.
This year showcases a stellar line-up of athletes back to defend their titles, including Ethiopian runner Kenenisa Bekele, who broke the world record for the 10,000m last year in Brussels. Belgium’s “national gazelle”, champion sprint athlete Kim Gevaert, will be back too.
Also competing will be the world’s best female pole vaulter, Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, winner of the 2004 Olympic Gold Medal (4.91m). She will compete with fellow athletes in all six IAAF meetings to receive a share of the $1m jackpot.
Wilfried Meert, the man behind it all, recently helped organise the third IAAF event in Dakar. This meeting is growing in popularity, attracting 20,000 spectators in 2004 and more than 60,000 this year.
Brussels Capital Region Minister for External Affairs, Guy Vanhengel attended the meeting in Dakar. “We are proud to export the know-how of this Brussels Memorial as an international product and at the same time, it makes us the most important athletic capital of the world,” he said.
What’s the magic formula that keeps people coming back to meetings year after year?
“It’s the incredible atmosphere that creates the magic,” Meert explains. “We put together a unique cocktail of sport and music that creates a dynamic, peaceful rhythm. It touches people from every segment of society, but it’s also a family event.”
The 30th anniversary will be marked by a parade of 35 Belgian Olympic medal winners, also honouring the 100th anniversary of the Belgian Olympic Committee. There in spirit surely will be Belgian middle distance runner Ivo Van Damme, double medal winner at the Montreal Olympics, who was killed in a car accident in 1976 at the age of 22.
Joining this year’s anticipated 47,000 spectators from all over Europe will be Belgian Crown Prince Philippe and a superstar line-up of entertainment.
DE MAGIE VAN DE BELGISCHE MEMORIAL
De Memorial Van Damme is hét Belgische atletiekevenement. Op 25 augustus 2006 viert deze prestigieuze meeting zijn 30ste verjaardag. De Memorial vormt samen met Oslo, Parijs, Rome, Zurich en Berlijn de Golden League van de internationale atletiekfederatie (IAAF).
Zoals steeds komen tal van wereldsterren er hun titel verdedigen, waaronder de Ethiopiër Kenenisa Bekele, die vorig jaar in Brussel het wereldrecord op de 10.000 meter brak. Ook de Belgische sprintster Kim Gevaert is weer van de partij.
Bij het polsstokspringen voor dames is het uitkijken naar de Russische wereldkampioene Yelena Isinbayeva, die op de Olympische Spelen van 2004 goud won met een sprong van 4,91m. Zij en heel wat andere atleten wedijveren om in hun discipline alle zes de IAAF-meetings te winnen en mee te dingen naar de prijzenpot van $1 miljoen.
Organisator Wilfried Meert reisde onlangs naar Senegal, waar hij zijn expertise ten dienste stelde van de derde IAAF-meeting in Dakar. Dat deze meeting aan populariteit wint, blijkt uit de 20.000 bezoekers in 2004 en de meer dan 60.000 dit jaar. Brussels minister van Externe betrekkingen Guy Vanhengel was er ook bij in Dakar. “We zijn trots dat de knowhow van de Brusselse Memorial dienstdoet als internationaal exportproduct. Dit maakt ons meteen tot belangrijkste atletiekhoofdstad van de wereld”.
Welke magische formule doet de mensen jaar na jaar terugkomen naar de Memorial?
“Het is de fantastische sfeer die voor de magie zorgt “, legt Meert uit. “We serveren een unieke cocktail van sport en muziek. Die combinatie van dynamiek en ontspanning spreekt iedereen aan. De meeting is trouwens ook een echt familiefeest.”
De 30ste verjaardag wordt gevierd met een parade van 35 Belgische Olympische medaillewinnaars, meteen een eerbetoon voor de 100ste verjaardag van het Belgisch Olympisch Comité. En vooral ook voor Ivo Van Damme zelf, natuurlijk, de Belgische middellangeafstandsloper en dubbele medaillewinnaar op de Olympische Spelen van Montreal, die in 1976 op 22-jarige leeftijd omkwam bij een verkeersongeval.
Naast de verwachte 47.000 toeschouwers uit heel Europa zal de Belgische kroonprins Filip het evenement bijwonen en zullen ook talloze supersterren van de partij zijn.
LA MAGIE DU “MÉMORIAL”
Le Mémorial Van Damme, en tête des rencontres de l’athlétisme en Belgique, fêtera ce 25 août son 30e anniversaire.
Cette année des grands noms de l’athlétisme ont confirmé leur participation: le coureur éthiopien Kenenisa Bekele, recordman du monde des 10 000 mètres, la “gazelle nationale” Kim Gevaert et la championne russe Yelena Isinbayeva, première dans le classement du saut en hauteur, Médaille d’Or aux Jeux Olympiques de 2004.
Wilfried Meert, l’organisateur, est rentré depuis peu du Sénégal où il a apporté son concours à la mise sur pied de la troisième compétition de l’IAAF à Dakar. Le Ministre des Affaires Etrangères à Bruxelles, Monsieur Guy Vanhengel a déclaré: “Nous sommes fiers d’exporter le savoir-faire de notre Mémorial, devenu un produit international de l’athlétisme dans le monde.”
Mais qu’est-ce qui fait le succès de ces rencontres, année après année?
“C’est l’atmosphère qui crée la magie”, explique Meert. “Un cocktail unique de sport et de musique font de ces rencontres de véritables spectacles.”
A l’occasion du 30e anniversaire, on assistera à un défilé des 35 Belges médaillés olympiques, célébrant aussi les 100 ans du Comité olympique belge. Le coureur belge Ivo Van Damme, double Médaille d’Argent aux Jeux de Montréal sera présent en esprit. On se souvient qu’il se tuait dans un accident de voiture en 1976, à l’âge de 22 ans.
