“I’ve been working in the airline business for the last 12 years, which makes me almost a veteran in Ivory Coast terms… I started in check-in, and gradually moved upwards – today I’m the Ground Ops Manager for Brussels Airlines here in Abidjan.
“It’s a varied job, and I like it a lot – there’s quite a lot to do every day, and as we’re only four in the office, we all have to be fairly apt at multi-tasking. For me, my day starts with a check back to Brussels, where I verify the take-off and route details of the flight we’re expecting several hours later. Then, when the departing passengers arrive, I have to check them in, as well as checking in the baggage.
“Before the plane’s arrival I have to calculate the weight of the aircraft based on the number of passengers boarding and the number of passengers in transit, baggage and cargo. I have to add the weight of the fuel that the captain decided to uplift. Then I have to brief the captain and the purser on arrival, supervise the embarkation, cargo loading and refuelling. And finally I have to prepare the captain’s load-sheet for take off, hand it over and wish him a pleasant onward journey!

“When I’m not working, what I like most it being with kids – I’m a mother of two myself and I teach Sunday School to children at our church here. But, I really enjoy being around children of that unique age between three and six when they’re so loveable and innocent, and they really can make us laugh and surprise us. In a way, they’re just like little angels.”

‘Je travaille dans le secteur aéronautique depuis ces douze dernières années, ce qui fait de moi quasiment une vétérante selon les critères de la Côte d’Ivoire … J’ai démarré dans le check-in, et graduellement j’ai grimpé les échelons – aujourd’hui je suis la Ground Ops Manager pour Brussels Airlines, ici, à Abidjan.’
‘C’est un job varié, que j’apprécie énormément – au jour le jour, les occupations ne manquent pas, et comme nous sommes seulement 4 dans le bureau, nous devons être multitâche. Pour ma part, ma journée commence par un contrôle général depuis Bruxelles, je vérifie les décollages et le détail des routes du vol que nous attendons quelques heures plus tard. Ensuite, dès l’arrivée des passagers du vol pour l’embarquement, je leur fais passer le contrôle et j’effectue aussi le contrôle des bagages.
Avant que l’appareil n’atterrisse, je dois calculer son poids sur base du nombre de passagers sur le point d’embarquer et ceux en transit en incluant aussi les bagages et le fret. Je dois y ajouter le poids de la quantité de fuel que le capitaine décide d’emporter. Ensuite je dois briefer le capitaine et le chef de cabine sur les opérations à l’arrivée, superviser l’embarquement, le chargement de la cargaison et le ravitaillement de l’appareil. Et enfin, je dois préparer la feuille de chargement à l’attention du capitaine, lui remettre en mains propres et lui souhaiter un bon voyage!
A Abidjan, c’est un véritable honneur de travailler pour une compagnie qui relie littéralement la Côte d’Ivoire au reste du monde… ajoutez à cela que je suis africaine et en plus, une femme ! C’est assez inhabituel je dois avouer, mais grâce à Brussels Airlines je suis une exception.
Lorsque je ne travaille pas, j’apprécie par dessus tout être avec mes enfants – j’en ai deux et j’enseigne aussi à des enfants à l’Ecole du Dimanche, ici dans notre église. Je les aime surtout entre l’âge de quatre et six ans, lorsqu’ils sont si charmants et innocents, ils peuvent vraiment nous faire rire et nous surprendre. D’une certaine façon, ce sont de petits anges….’

Ik werk ondertussen al 12 jaar in de luchtvaartsector. Hier in Ivoorkust ben ik dan ook bijna een oudgediende! Ik begon bij de check-in om dan geleidelijk op te klimmen. Nu ben ik Ground Operations Manager voor Brussels Airlines in Abidjan.
Het is een erg afwisselende baan, en ik doe mijn werk enorm graag. Elke dag opnieuw is het razend druk. Op kantoor zijn we maar met z’n vieren, dus iedereen is expert in multitasking. Mijn dag begint met contact met Brussel, om de opstijg- en routedetails te checken van de vlucht die wij enkele uren later mogen verwachten. Wanneer daarna de reizigers voor vertrek hier op de luchthaven toekomen, zorg ik voor de check-in van passagiers en bagage.
Vóór de aankomst van de vlucht moet ik het gewicht van het vliegtuig berekenen op basis van het aantal passagiers dat hier aan boord zal gaan, de passagiers in transit, hun bagage en de eventuele vracht. Daarbij komt nog het gewicht van de brandstof die de kapitein zal bijtanken. Bij aankomst moet ik dan de kapitein en de purser briefen, zorgen dat de passagiers vlot aan boord kunnen, en het laden van de vracht en het bijtanken opvolgen. Tot slot bezorg ik de kapitein het loadsheet en wens ik hem een prettige vlucht.
In Abidjan is het een eer om te mogen werken voor een bedrijf dat de Ivoorkust letterlijk met de rest van de wereld verbindt. Bovendien is het in Afrika ongebruikelijk dat een vrouw mijn functie bekleedt. Dankzij Brussels Airlines ben ik dus een buitenbeentje.
Wanneer ik niet werk heb ik het liefst kinderen in de buurt. Zelf heb ik er twee, en ik geef ook les op een zondagsschool aan de kinderen van onze kerk. Vooral tussen de drie en zes jaar oud zijn ze geweldig! Zo onschuldig en oprecht. Ze verrassen je keer op keer, en brengen je vaak aan het lachen. Echte engeltjes…
