Asense of place is everything in a hotel and, increasingly, in a spa as well. The best spas are those inspired by their surroundings, sourcing the finest natural ingredients to create treatments and products unique to both the spa and the location.
Spa La Manga Club, Murcia, Spain
Murcia, in southern Spain, is famous for its saltwater lagoon and curative muds. Spa La Manga Club, which is connected to the Hyatt Regency La Manga Hotel, offers a whole range of treatments – from relaxing to therapeutic – that make use of both these natural resources. You can pop in for a quick massage or book yourself an elaborate spa package combining everything from hydrotherapy, reflexology and body wraps to facials and manicures.
Perched high on a hillside overlooking the resort, the spa’s Jacuzzis, spa suites and relaxation rooms are all positioned to make the most of the fabulous views. Signature holistic treatment rituals include Lomi Juma – an uplifting and energising Hawaiian massage combined with an exfoliating honey scrub and purifying hot and cold organic mud wraps – and Thalasso Kur, a nourishing treatment including an antioxidant body wrap and a stimulating seaweed bath with eucalyptus oil and marine firming body cream.

Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa, Bordeaux, France
It was a chance conversation with a professor at the University of Bordeaux that persuaded wine producers Bertrand and Mathilde Cathiard-Thomas to start saving grape skins, bi-products of their wine production, and use them in the production of free-radical fighting skin products. Both had worked for Oréal, so they knew that free radicals are responsible for 80% of the symptoms of ageing skin – and the rest is history.
Today their Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa at the Les Sources de Caudalie hotel is renowned worldwide. Housed in a pretty chateau and various outbuildings amid the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte vineyards, not far from Bordeaux, the hotel has 49 rural-chic bedrooms, two exquisite restaurants and the spa, which offers an eclectic range of grape-based scrubs, baths and massages.
Les Sources de Caudalie has just won Hotel of the Year 2007 from Small Luxury Hotels of the World and there is much in the pipeline including a Sources de Caudalie hotel in Gstaad in 2009.

Son Brull Hotel & Spa, Mallorca
The ethos behind the world’s first Mallorcan-inspired spa – located at the incredibly hip Hotel Son Brull in a converted 12th-century monastery near Pollenca – is that its treatments combine the best of the island’s rich natural resources with contemporary concepts of health and relaxation. Handmade treatments use local ingredients, including olive and almond oils, aloe vera, honey and fleur de sel.
Although individual treatments (try the wellbeing bath or the almond oil aromatherapy massage) are available, the spa has exceptional one and two-day programmes with names like Tuning for Her and Tuning for Him (€225 each). The former incorporates exfoliating body and facial treatments with orange blossom, honey and clay from Polenca, hydrating body emulsion, a facial massage, manicure and pedicure. There are also heated indoor and outdoor pools and two indoor and two outdoor treatment areas.

Masseria san domenico, Italy
Housed in a whitewashed converted 15th-century watchtower just a few hundred metres from the Adriatic Sea between Bari and Brindisi in Puglia, this lovely family-owned hotel has one of the world’s best thalassotherapy spas – even its main swimming pool is salt water. Many of the treatments also use the estate’s own range of olive oil based products. The spa experience is taken very seriously and every guest is examined by a doctor beforehand and given dietary recommendations if requested.
Both seawater and seaweed have been scientifically refined to create a range of excellent treatments that invigorate, detoxify and leave skin feeling amazingly soft and supple. Signature body treatments include marine scrubs, circulation-improving lymphatic massages and olive oil aromatherapy (a moisturising scrub and full body massage) – considered the jewel in the crown of the spa menu.

Therme Vals, Switzerland
In a spectacular high Alpine location in Switzerland’s least populated canton Graubünden, this glamorous modernist hotel, bathhouse and wellness centre, built from locally quarried quartzite, is one of the coolest looking hotels in the world. Its main attraction is a series of six thermal pools (including a fire and an ice pool) filled directly from St Peters, a natural spring on the mountain above.
Chilling out in strategically placed reclining chairs facing huge glass windows overlooking the valley is an integral part of the Therme Vals experience. With monastic chanting gently pumped from hidden speakers throughout the spa, it would be a challenge not to relax. On the floor below is a wellness centre with 13 treatment rooms offering reflexology, shiatsu, Lomi Lomi massages and other relaxing treatments.

Royal Spa at Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal, Budapest, Hungary
In a brilliant location on the Erzsebet Boulevard in the centre of Budapest, the classical Royal Spa relaunched last year after a major refurbishment, bringing it up-to-date with contemporary spas and returning it to its traditional roots at the same time. The hotel was built in 1896 and the highlight of the new spa is the beautifully restored 1903 bathhouse, christened by Ricky Martin, who was the first person to swim in its pool last July.
The pool is complemented by saunas, steam baths, Jacuzzis and a treatment menu designed by French spa specialist Algotherm, famous for its use of seaweed, mud and other marine ingredients and for responsibly sourcing its ingredients. Being Budapest, a day at the spa is a pleasingly affordable experience.

Ce qui compte avant tout dans un hôtel est l’impression que l’on a du lieu, et c’est de plus en plus le cas pour les stations thermales. Les meilleures sont celles qui s’inspirent de leur cadre, qui sélectionnent les meilleurs ingrédients naturels pour créer des soins et des produits spécifiques à leur établissement et à leur environnement direct.
Le Spa La Manga Club, Murcie, Espagne
Située au sud de l’Espagne, Murcie est célèbre pour ses lagunes d’eaux salées et ses boues aux vertus curatives. Le Spa La Manga Club, hébergé dans l’hôtel Hyatt Regency La Manga, propose un vaste choix de soins – allant de la relaxation aux soins thérapeutiques – se servant de ces deux ressources naturelles. Vous pouvez y faire un saut pour un simple massage ou réserver un ensemble élaboré de soins complets allant de l’hydrothérapie à la réflexologie en passant par les enveloppements corporels, les massages faciaux ou les manucures.
Perchés à flan d’une colline qui domine le complexe, les jacuzzis, suites et salles de relaxations sont orientés de façon à tirer le meilleur parti de la vue fabuleuse. Le Spa Vinotherapie Caudalie, Bordeaux, France
C’est par hasard, à la suite d’une conversation avec un professeur de l’Université de Bordeaux, que les vignerons Bertrand et Mathilde Cathiard-Thomas se décident à conserver la peau des raisins, sous-produit de leur production viticole, et à l’utiliser dans la fabrication de produits cosmétiques de lutte contre les radicaux libres. Ayant tous les deux travaillé pour l’Oréal, ils savaient que les radicaux libres sont responsables de 80% des symptômes de vieillissement de la peau – et l’histoire a fait le reste.
Aujourd’hui, leur Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie, situé dans l’hôtel Les Sources de Caudalie, est connu dans le monde entier. Situé dans un ravissant château flanqué de plusieurs bâtiments extérieurs, au milieu des vignes du Château Smith Haut Lafitte, non loin de Bordeaux, l’hôtel compte 49 chambres dans un style rural chic, deux restaurants raffinés et le Spa, qui offre toute une variété de gommages, bains et massages à base de raisin.
Les Sources de Caudalie vient juste d’être nommé Hôtel de l’année 2007 par le guide Small Luxury Hotels of the World et ce n’est pas tout : un Spa va ouvrir à Paris l’année prochaine ainsi qu’un tout nouvel hôtel Source de Caudalie à Gstaad en 2009.

Le Son Brull Hôtel et Spa, Majorque
Le génie de la première station thermale majorquine – situé dans le très branché Hôtel Son Brull, un monastère du 12ème siècle reconverti, proche de Pollensa – c’est que ses soins combinent le meilleur des multiples ressources naturelles de l’île aux concepts contemporains en matière de santé et de relaxation. Les soins préparés à la main utilisent les ingrédients locaux, incluant l’olive, l’huile d’amandes douces, l’aloe vera, le miel et la fleur de sel.
Bien que des soins individuels soient disponibles (essayez le bain de bien-être ou le massage et aromathérapie à l’huile d’amandes douces), le spa propose des programmes exceptionnels d’un ou deux jours aux noms de « Mise au point pour elle » ou « Mise au point pour lui » (225€ chacun). Ces derniers englobent des soins exfoliants pour le corps et le visage à la fleur d’oranger, au miel et à l’argile de Pollensa, une émulsion hydratante pour le corps, un massage facial, une manucure et pédicure. Il y a également des piscines chauffées couvertes et en plein air ainsi que deux espaces de soin couverts ou en plein air.

Masseria San Domenico, Italy
Situé dans une tour de guet du 15ème siècle blanchie à la chaux à quelques centaines de mètres à peine de l’Adriatique, entre Bari et Brindisi dans les Pouilles, ce ravissant hôtel familial abrite l’un des meilleurs centres de thalassothérapie du monde – même la piscine principale est remplie d’eau de mer. Nombre des soins utilisent aussi le propre choix de produits à base d’huile d’olive du domaine. L’expérience thérapeutique est prise très au sérieux : chaque visiteur est d’abord examiné par un médecin et peut se voir proposer des recommandations diététiques s’il le souhaite.
L’eau de mer et les algues ont toutes deux été traitées par des méthodes scientifiques pour créer une variété de soins excellents qui tonifient, détoxifient et rendent la peau incroyablement souple et douce. Parmi les soins maison, on retrouve le gommage à l’eau de mer, le drainage lymphatique pour améliorer la circulation sanguine et l’aromathérapie à l’huile d’olive (un gommage hydratant et un massage complet du corps) – considérée comme la cerise sur le gâteau au menu de l’établissement.

Les Thermes de Vals, Suisse
Situé dans un site spectaculaire en altitude, dans le canton de Graubünden, le moins peuplé de la Suisse, ce prestigieux hôtel moderniste combinant établissement de bains et centre de bien-être, construit en quartzite local, est l’un des hôtels les plus paisibles du monde. Sa principale attraction est une série de six piscines thermales (incluant un bain de feu et un bain de glace) directement alimentées par la source naturelle de Saint-Pierre, issue de la montagne qui domine les thermes.
Se relaxer allongé dans des fauteuils stratégiquement inclinés tournés vers d’immenses baies vitrées en face de la vallée fait partie intégrante de l’expérience aux thermes de Vals. Avec les chants monastiques doucement diffusés par des enceintes dissimulées un peu partout, ne pas se détendre relèverait du défi. A l’étage inférieur se trouve un centre de bien-être qui comporte 13 salles de soin proposant de la réflexologie, du shiatsu, des massages Lomi Lomi et d’autres soins de relaxation.

Le Royal Spa du Corinthia Grand Hôtel Royal, Budapest, Hongrie
Situé dans un lieu splendide sur le boulevard Erzsebet au centre de Budapest, le très classique Royal Spa a rouvert l’année dernière après d’importantes rénovations qui le classent au rang des stations thermales dernier cri, sans toutefois le départir son caractère traditionnel. L’hôtel a été construit en 1896 et le clou de la station thermale, ce sont ses bains de 1903, magnifiquement restaurés et inaugurés par Ricky Martin, qui a été le premier à y nager dans en juillet dernier. Les bains sont accompagnés de saunas, bains turcs, jacuzzis et d’un éventail de soins imaginés par le spécialiste français des soins thermaux Algotherm, célèbre pour son utilisation d’algues, de boues et d’autres ingrédients d’origine marine ainsi que pour la sélection responsable de ses ingrédients. Le Royal Spa se trouvant à Budapest, y passer une journée est une expérience agréablement abordable.

Murcia, in Zuid-Spanje, staat bekend om zijn zoutwaterlagune en helende modderbaden. De Spa La Manga Club gebruikt beide bronnen voor holistische hydro-, thalasso- en moddertherapieën, evenals diverse schoonheidsbehandelingen.
In het Franse Bordeaux vonden wijnbouwers een andere toepassing voor hun producten. De Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa van hotel Les Sources de Caudalie biedt een reeks eclectische peelings, baden en massages op basis van druiven, met plantenextracten die vrije radicalen en veroudering tegengaan.
Het eerste Mallorcaanse kuuroord bevindt zich in Hotel Son Brull, een verbouwde 12e-eeuwse abdij nabij Pollença. Daar combineert men de natuurlijke rijkdommen van het eiland met de moderne opvattingen over wellness. De verzorgingsproducten zijn bereid met olijfolie, amandelolie en honing.
Het hotel Masseria San Domenico in het Italiaanse Puglia, vlak bij de Adriatische Zee, is dan weer een van ‘s werelds beste thalassokuuroorden. Ook daar bevatten vele producten olijfolie van het domein zelf.
In het naburige Zwitserland beschikt het riante modernistische hotel Therme Vals over zes thermaalbaden, met water van een natuurlijke bron op de berg boven het hotel.
De Royal Spa in het Hongaarse Boedapest kan bogen op een mooi gerestaureerd badhuis uit 1903. Maar voor behandelingen volgens de laatste snufjes raden we Algotherm aan, bekend voor het gebruik van duurzaam gewonnen zeeingrediënten.
