John Surman

Active as a baritone saxophonist for the Mike Westbrook band since the ’60s, John Surman has collaborated with some of the greatest British jazz musicians throughout his career. SOS, the trio he founded, was one of the first ever all-saxophone jazz groups. It pushed traditional jazz into the realms of electronic music by combining synthesizers with the dynamic solos of the three saxophonists. Surman has toured with orchestras and composed music for festivals, theatre and film. His latest recording, Rain on the Window, was released last year.
John Surman s’est fait connaître comme saxophoniste baryton dans l’orchestre de Mike Westbrook dans les années 60. Il enchaîne ensuite avec diverses collaborations parmi lesquelles les plus grands musiciens de jazz britanniques. SOS, le trio qu’il a fondé, fut l’un des tout premiers groupes de jazz de saxophone. Il a propulsé le jazz traditionnel dans les sphères de la musique électronique en combinant synthétiseurs et la dynamique de trois saxophonistes solos. Surman a fait de nombreuses tournées avec des orchestres et il a composé de la musique pour des festivals, des représentations théâtrales et des films. Son dernier album, Rain On The Window, est sorti l’année dernière.
