Formed in 1995 in East Sussex, the three- piece were known as ‘the band with no guitars’, instead fusing instruments like the banjo, violin and saxophone along with their signature piano. Their debut album Hopes And Fears was a massive success, winning multiple awards and ranking as the second best selling British album of 2004. Their follow-up Under The Iron Sea met with similar critical acclaim, selling over 2.5 million copies to date. Leaving behind the heavy piano ballads of their previous releases 2008’s Perfect Symmetry recalls ’80s synthesizer-pop and incorporates electric guitars for the first time. The band start touring off the back of their new album in January.
Formé en 1995 dans l’East Sussex, le trio s’est d’emblée démarqué par ‘l’absence de guitares’, basant plutôt leurs compositions sur la fusion d’instruments comme le banjo, le violon et le saxophone ainsi que le piano, leur son distinctif. L’album du début Hopes And Fears rencontra un succès phénoménal, remportant de multiples récompenses et il fut la seconde meilleure vente de l’année 2004 au Royaume-Uni. Leur album suivant Under The Iron Sea reçut une reconnaissance similaire, avec plus de 2,5 millions d’exemplaires vendus à ce jour. Délaissant les éternelles ballades au piano de leurs morceaux précédents, leur Perfect Symmetry, en 2008, intègre pour la première fois des synthétiseurs dans l’esprit pop des années 80 et des guitares électriques. Le groupe entreprend la tournée de leur nouvel album en janvier.
