GETTING AROUND Banjul has a simple taxi payment system for tourists, which works out more expensive than the everyday yellow taxis but saves a lot of hassle. Green tourist taxis will take you from the airport to the main hotel/beach centre 15km away. Prices are printed on a board outside the airport, but check with the driver before you set off.
EAT OUT Safari Garden Hotel (off Atlantic Road, Fajara, tel. 449 5887, safarigarden.com) is an eco-hotel with a fantastic restaurant serving local produce and quirky takes on Gambian cuisine. There’s also a delightful pool, which guests are free to use. The Butcher’s Shop (130 Kairaba Avenue, Fajara, tel. 449 5069) is a great place to try beautifully cooked local ingredients in elegant surroundings. Dine on the terrace and enjoy the buzz of this busy restaurant.
NIGHTLIFE Jazziz (Palma Rima Road, Kololi) is a popular live-music bar, where local bands often play salsa and jazz. Lama Lama (off Atlantic Road, Bakau) is low-key and lively. Good reggae and Afro bands sometimes play here, so it’s worth swinging by to see what’s on. The venue also serves reasonable food.
GREEN TIPS
For a great half-day trip, Abuko Nature Reserve (on the BrikamaSerrekunda road), is a small piece of forest full of animals and birds.
A canoe ride in the Tanbi Wetland Complex followed by lunch at Lamin Lodge (near Lamin, tel. 449 5526), is another relaxing way to spend time. The Lodge is built over the river and surrounded by impressive mangroves.

SE DÉPLACER Banjul propose un système de payement unique des taxis destinés aux touristes qui s’avère plus onéreux que le classique taxi jaune, mais qui en revanche épargne bien des soucis. Les ‘taxis de touristes’ verts vous emmèneront de l’aéroport jusqu’au principal hôtel de la plage, à 15km du centre. Les prix sont imprimés à l’extérieur de l’aéroport, mais contrôlez quand même avec le chauffeur avant de démarrer.

On y sert une cuisine locale et des plats singuliers gambiens. Appréciez également son agréable piscine, où les clients du restaurant peuvent se plonger sans restriction. The Butcher’s Shop (130 Kairaba Avenue, Fajara, tél. 449 5069) est un endroit idéal pour découvrir des plats locaux préparés avec goût, dans un cadre élégant. Dînez sur la terrasse et appréciez l’agréable brouhaha de ce restaurant fréquenté.
VIE NOCTURNE Jazziz (Palma Rima Road, Kololi) est un bar populaire de musique live. Des groupes locaux de salsa et de jazz s’y produisent régulièrement en concert. Lama Lama (près de la rue Atlantique, Bakau) est un lieu sobre qui a son public d’habitués.
De bons groupes de reggae et d’Afro y jouent de temps à autre, cela vaut donc la peine de jeter un œil sur la programmation. La maison propose aussi de la cuisine à des prix raisonnables.
ÉCO-GUIDE
La Réserve naturelle d’Abuko (sur la route de Brikama-Serrekunda) se prête parfaitement à une excursion d’une demi-journée. C’est un petit bout de forêt peuplée d’une grande variété d’animaux et d’oiseaux. Vous pouvez aussi passer agréablement la journée en faisant un tour en canoë dans le Tanbi Wetland Complex, suivi par un lunch au Lamin Lodge (près de Lamin, tél. 449 5526). Le Lodge, construit en surplomb du fleuve, est entouré d’impressionnantes mangroves.
VERVOER Banjul heefteen eenvoudig taxisysteem voor toeristen. Het is iets duurder dan de gewone gele taxi’s maar het bespaart je heel wat gedoe. Handige groene ‘toeristentaxi’s’ brengen je van de luchthaven naar het grootste hotel-en strandcentrum 15 km verderop. De prijzen staan op een bord buiten de luchthaven, maar bevestig ze best bij de bestuurder voor je vertrekt!
