GETTING AROUND The airport is 15km from the centre of town and a taxi should cost around CFA 5,000 (€7,60), including luggage and some hard bargaining. Most hotels can also arrange an airport pick-up.
EAT OUT La Marocaine (Rue A, Point E district, tel. 33 825 5352) is an authentic Moroccan restaurant serving good tagines and other North African fare, but is closed on Sundays. Patisserie Laetitia (Avenue de la Republique/ Lamine Gueye, Plateau) is a charming café, unchanged since the 1970s, with buttery croissants, strong coffee and fresh orange juice. Excellent for spotting fine Senegalese outfits and reading the papers.
NIGHTLIFE As well as having the usual top music acts from midnight, Pen’Art Jazz Club (Boulevard du Sud, Point E district, tel. 33 864 5131) has music soirées, with dinner and an early evening gig. Call for details. Every Sunday night, Waa Kam Chill (Point E district) holds an open-mic evening with acoustic music and poetry, plus the occasional film screening. Great for meeting locals and expats with similar musical interests.
GREEN TIPS N’Gor Island is a special haven off the north coast of the Dakar peninsular. Take a wooden pirogue from N’Gor beach and spend the day enjoying calm waters and good local food. Just 4km west of the Dakar peninsular are the Îles de la Madeleine, curious rocky formations surrounded by azure ocean. Take a boat from the national park headquarters, just south of Terrou Bi on the Corniche Road.

La Marocaine (Rue A, Point E district, tél. 33 825 5352) est un authentique restaurant marocain qui sert de succulentes tajines et d’autres plats de la cuisine nord africaine. Notez qu’il est fermé le dimanche. La Pâtisserie Laetitia (Avenue de la République/ Lamine Gueye, Plateau) est un agréable café, immuable depuis les années 1970, où l’on déguste des croissants au beurre, du café corsé et du jus d’orange pressé. Endroit excellent pour faire du repérage sur les dernières tenues vestimentaires sénégalaises et lire le journal.
VIE NOCTURNE À côté de ses fantastiques concerts qui démarrent habituellement à partir de minuit, le Jazz Club Pen’Art (Boulevard du Sud, Quartier Point E, tél. 33 864 5131) propose désormais des soirées musicales, comprenant un dîner et quelques pas de danse tôt dans la soirée. Appelez pour les informations pratiques. Chaque dimanche soir, Waa Kam Chill (Quartier Point E) organise une session “micro ouvert”, avec de la musique acoustique et de la poésie, et à l’occasion la projection d’un film en avant-soirée. Très intéressant pour rencontrer des Dakarois et des expatriés partageant les mêmes goûts musicaux.
ÉCO-GUIDE L’île de N’Gor est un havre de sérénité, non loin de la côte nord de la péninsule de Dakar. Prenez une pirogue depuis la plage de N’Gor et descendez au fil des eaux calmes pour la journée, et appréciez aussi la cuisine locale. À quelque 4km à l’ouest de la péninsule de Dakar se trouvent les îles de la Madeleine, d’étonnantes formations rocheuses entourées par l’océan bleu azur. Pour y accéder, prenez un bateau depuis le quartier général du parc national, juste au sud de Terrou Bi, sur la route de la corniche.

GROENE TIPS N’Gor Island is een speciaal toevluchtsoord aan de noordkust van het schiereiland Dakar. Vertrek in een houten prauw op het strand N’Gor en geniet van een ontspannen dag op het water. Net 4 km ten westen van de landpunt van Dakar liggen de kleine Madeleine-eilanden. U kunt de boot nemen vanuit het hoofdkwartier van het nationale park, net ten zuiden van Terrou Bi, op de Route de la Corniche.
