GETTING AROUND Jomo Kenyatta Airport is 15km from the city centre. A taxi into town costs around KES 1,200 (€12). Negotiate the fare in advance and don’t pay more because of “rising fuel costs” or “traffic jams” – Nairobi is a city close to gridlock anyway. Or take the No.34 City Hoppa bus for KES 30 (€0,30).
EAT OUT For sweet and savoury crêpes and excellent Mediterranean fare, try Le Rustique (General Mathenge Drive, tel. (0)72 160 9601), where diplomats vie for tables on the lawn. If you’re craving Pad Thai in one of Nairobi’s most elegant rooms, book a table at Thai-Chi (Sarova Stanley Hotel, Kenyatta Avenue, tel. (0)20 275 7000).
NIGHTLIFE Located in the up-and-coming Hurlingham neighbourhood, Sippers (Hurlingham Court Building, Argwings Kodek Road) is Nairobi’s answer to the archetypal hole-in-the-wall pub, with outdoor tables, football on a big screen and some of the best roast goat in town. For a slightly more refined venue go to Casablanca (Nyangumi Road), where things don’t tend to wind down until well after sunrise.
GREEN TIPS Just minutes from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi National Park (Langata Road) offers the feel of the African savannah, with giraffe, antelope and ostrich. Go with a safari organisation or, on a dry day, hire a regular taxi to take you through the park. For a shady stroll or picnic near the city centre, head to the Nairobi Arboretum (State House Road) and watch the next generation of long-distance running legends training on the hilly jogging trail.

ÉCO-GUIDE À quelques minutes seulement du centre de Nairobi, le Parc National de Nairobi (entrée sur la Route de Langata) offre cette sensation de vraie savane africaine, avec des girafes, des antilopes et des autruches. Découvrez-le dans le cadre d’une organisation de safari-tourisme ou encore, par temps sec, louez un taxi qui vous fera faire le tour du parc. EEN AVONDJE UIT Sippers (Hurlingham Court Building, Argwings Kodek Road) ligt in de steeds populairder wordende buurt Hurlingham en is de tegenhanger van de archetypische bruine kroeg. Je vindt er voetbal op een groot scherm en overheerlijk geroosterd geitenvlees. Bij Casablanca (Nyangumi Road) is alles heel wat verfijnder, al blijft de tent flink actief tot een gat in de volgende ochtend.
GROENE TIPS Op een paar minuten van het stadscentrum van Nairobi ligt het Nairobi National Park. Bezoekers kunnen er de sfeer opsnuiven van de echte Afrikaanse savanne. Voel je meer voor een wandeling of picknick in de schaduw in de buurt van de stad, trek dan naar het Nairobi Arboretum (State House Road).
