GETTING AROUND
Abidjan Airport isn’t far from the city centre and metered taxis wait outside the gate. A ride to Plateau, where most business hotels are located, costs between CFA 3,000 (€4,60) and CFA 6,000 (€9,10). You can negotiate a fixed rate or have the driver use his meter. Rates double after midnight. The first taxi in the line will often wait for someone who doesn’t know the rate, so move down the line if you’re not given a reasonable price.
EAT OUT
There are several great Vietnamese restaurants in Abidjan, but the pick of the bunch is La Tour de Jade (Avenue Chardy, Plateau, tel. 2021 5724) with its rich, dark interior. For something more local, the newly refurbished Maquis 331 (opposite Lycée Mermoz, Cocody, tel. 2244 0341) has a great selection of stews at lunchtime and grilled fish and chicken in the evenings.
☛ NIGHTLIFE A short walk from Maquis 331 is the classy Times Square (Avenue Jean Mermoz, Cocody), a place to look cool with the urban crowd. At the other end of town, Che Café (Rue 7 Décembre, Marcory Zone 4) has salsa, cocktails and big armchairs.
BEST BEACHES
The former capital Grand-Bassam is a popular choice, but Assinie, 90 minutes’ drive east along the coast road, has superb deserted beaches and safer waters for swimming. The ultimate beach is probably Dagbego, near Sassandra (contact the Best of Africa Hotel, tel. 3472 0606, bestofafrica.org). It’s three and a half hours’ drive west, but you’ll struggle to find a more beautiful spot.
SE DÉPLACER
L’aéroport d’Abidjan n’est pas très éloigné du centre ville et des taxis avec compteurs attendent à l’extérieur. Une course jusqu’au Plateau, où sont localisés la plupart des hôtels d’affaires, coûte entre CFA 3 000 (4,60 €) et CFA 6 000 (9,10 €). Vous pouvez négocier un tarif fixe ou demander au chauffeur d’utiliser le compteur. Les tarifs doublent après minuit. Le premier taxi en tête de file attend souvent un client qui ne connaît pas les tarifs, choisissez dès lors une autre voiture si le prix proposé n’est pas acceptable.
OÙ MANGER ?
Abidjan compte quelques délicieux restaurants vietnamiens, mais le nec plus ultra est La Tour de Jade (Avenue Chardy, Plateau, tél. 2021 5724) avec son intérieur luxueux et tamisé. Pour une option plus locale, le Maquis 331 récemment rénové (face au Lycée Mermoz, Cocody, tél. 2244 0341) propose une fantastique sélection de sauces pour le lunch et du poisson et poulet grillé au menu du soir.
VIE NOCTURNE
À une courte distance du Maquis 331 se trouve Times Square (Avenue Jean Mermoz, Cocody), un lieu de standing pour ceux qui veulent se fondre au milieu d’une foule urbaine branchée. À l’autre bout de la ville, le Café Che (Rue 7 Décembre, Marcory Zone 4) vit au rythme de la salsa et des cocktails, avec le confort des chaises longues.
PLAGES PARADISIAQUES
L’ancienne capitale coloniale, Grand-Bassam, est le choix populaire, mais Assinie, à 90 minutes de route le long du littoral côtier, propose de sublimes plages désertes et des eaux plus sûres pour nager. Dagbego se distingue comme la plage ultime, près de Sassandra (contactez l’Hôtel Best of Africa, tél. 3472 0606, bestofafrica.org). Elle se situe à trois heures et demie de route vers l’ouest, mais vous trouverez difficilement lieu plus sublime.

De luchthaven van Abidjan ligt dicht bij het stadscentrum. Buiten de poorten wachten taxi’s met een meter je op. Een rit naar Plateau, waar de meeste zakenhotels liggen, kost CFA 3000 (€ 4,60) à 6000 (€ 9,10). Spreek een vaste prijs af of betaal de meter van de taxi. Dubbel tarief na middernacht.
UIT ETEN
Abidjan heeft heel wat prima Vietnamese restaurants maar La Tour de Jade (Avenue Chardy, Plateau, tel. 2021 5724) met zijn rijk, duister interieur spant de kroon. Voor wat meer couleur locale moet je in het recent vernieuwde Maquis 331 zijn (tegenover Lycée Mermoz, Cocody, tel. 2244 0341). Je smult er ’s middags van heerlijke sausjes en ’s avonds staat er gegrilde vis en kip op het menu.
EEN AVONDJE UIT
Op wandelafstand van Maquis 331 vind je het stijlvolle Times Square (Avenue Jean Mermoz, Cocody), een trendy plek om te ontspannen tussen het stadsvolkje. Aan de andere kant van het dorp ligt Che Café (Rue 7 Décembre, Marcony Zone 4), gekend voor zijn salsa, cocktails en grote leunstoelen.
DE BESTE STRANDEN
De voormalige koloniale hoofdstad Grand-Bassam is erg populair maar Assinie, zo’n 90 minuten oostwaarts rijden langs de kustweg, heeft prachtige verlaten stranden en wat meer veilige plekken om te zwemmen. Het mooiste strand van de streek is waarschijnlijk Dagbego, vlak bij Sassandra (neem contact op met het Best of Africa Hotel, tel. 3472 0606, bestofafrica.org). Het ligt op 3,5 uur rijden naar het westen, maar het is een stukje paradijs op aarde.
