September Whites Couvent des Jacobins 2007, Louis Jadot, White Burgundy, France €13,10 A 100% chardonnay giving a pale straw yellow colour with gold reflections. Flowers on the nose as well as the palette, with hints of fresh fruits such as pear, peach and grapefruit, as well as a touch of vanilla. Crisp, structured, pleasant and harmonious. Best with white meats, poultry, fish, seafood and goat’s cheese. One of the best known négociants in Burgundy, Louis Jadot owns more than 150 hectares of vineyards in the region, the majority of which are premiers and grands crus from the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Montes Sauvignon 2008, Leyda Valley, Chilli €11,40 This 100% Sauvignon has a fresh and appealing mineral character that brings to mind peaches, pineapples and other tropical fruits as well as hints of more citric fruits. With the typically powerful nose of a good Sauvignon Blanc, the palate shows a persistence and freshness that gives a clue to the grape’s cool growth zone with its morning fogs, low temperatures and long hanging period. Best with fresh seafood, grilled fish or on its own as an aperitif. 90/100 in the Wine Spectator. Reds Château Godeau, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2003, Bordeaux, France €20,30 A judicious mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this classic Saint-Emilion Grand Cru will never let you down. Its purple/red colour goes well with a great nose full of raspberries and strawberries, as well as subtle hints of vanilla and leather. Powerful and well balanced on the palate, this Château Godeau has good tannins and a very long aftertaste. Best with meat, pasta and soft cheeses. Made by the Moueix family, who also own the more famous Châteaux Petrus, Trotanoy and Magdelaine. 90/100 at the Cellar Tracker tasting in New York last year. Salentein Numina 2004, Argentina €20,20 An excellent malbec and merlot mix, this medium ruby wine offers sexy oak spices that lift-off the nose of black raspberry, plum and violet. A supple and ripe, juicy flavour comes through on the mouth, with a hint of candied berry sweetness carrying through on the palate. A wine with excellent depth and freshness, the Salentein Numina finishes with broad tannins and lingering sweetness. Best with roasted meat, soft cheeses, pasta and stews, this vintage has been awarded 90/100 by both Robert and Stephen Tanzer. October Whites Attems Sauvignon Blanc 2007 €14,10 Made with 100% Sauvignon grapes, this bright Italian white is a brilliant straw yellow. With hints of honey, herbs and asparagus on the nose, it’s uncomplicated in the mouth; clean, crisp and refreshing. Serve it at 10º with white meat, fish, light vegetables and cheese sauces. Or as an aperitif. Château de Cruzeau, Pessac Léognan – Grand Vin de Graves 2006 €14,10 Produced by André Lurton, one of the best winemakers in Bordeaux, this pale yellow Sauvignon picked up plaudits in Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2009 (they rated it as vin très réussi – a very well made wine). With an aroma of white flowers and citrus fruit, and a fresh, almost mineral taste, it’s best served at 10º-12º with fish, seafood and asparagus. Reds Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 €20,60 Made with 90% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and 10% Merlot, this Chilean red is an intense ruby colour, with a nose full of blackberry, blackcurrant and tobacco. Full bodied and well balanced in the mouth, it scored 90/100 in The Wine Advocate. It’s best served at 16º with meat, pasta and creamy cheeses. Château Clauzet, Médoc Cru bourgeois supérieur 2006 €21,80 Straight from the vineyard of Belgian businessman Baron Maurice Velge, this rich red is made wth 40% Merlot grapes, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.
