GETTING AROUND
Banjul has a simple taxi payment system for tourists, which works out more expensive than the everyday yellow taxis but saves a lot of hassle. Green tourist taxis will take you from the airport to the main hotel/beach centre 15km away. Prices are printed on a board outside the airport, but check with the driver before you set off.
EAT OUT
Gaya Art Café (Bertil Harding Highway, Senegambia, tel. 446 4022) serves delicious organic food and good coffee, and is set inside an art gallery filled with African sculptures and fabrics. To experience town life, head to the Youth Monument Bar & Restaurant (Westfield Junction, Serrekunda). This bustling restaurant offers cheap beer and simple grilled food, and if you’re there on the right night, there might be something on at Jokor, the nearby live-music club.
NIGHTLIFE
The popular Calabash Nightclub (Palma Rima Road, Kololi), which occasionally has big-name live bands from around The Gambia and Senegal, also has a restaurant on the ground floor and a roof terrace with a bar. For a typical low-key beach hangout with a manicured garden, hammocks and a simple restaurant, Leybato (off Atlantic Road, Fajara) is perfect for early evening drinks.

For tuition in the spellbinding West African harp, the kora, contact kora player and teacher Alagi M’Bye at Maali’s Music School in Nema Kunku (Serrekunda and Sukuta, tel. 995 0030). The kora dates back 700 years, but is still widely played today.

Banjul propose un système de payement unique des taxis destinés aux touristes, qui s’avère plus onéreux que le classique taxi jaune, mais qui en revanche épargne bien des soucis. Les « taxis de touristes » verts vous emmèneront de l’aéroport jusqu’au principal hôtel de la plage, à 15 km du centre. Les prix sont imprimés à l’extérieur de l’aéroport, mais contrôlez quand même avec le chauffeur avant de démarrer.

Le Gaya Art Café (Grand route Bertil Harding, Sénégambie, tél. 446 4022) sert une délicieuse cuisine bio ainsi que du bon café. L’endroit est situé à l’intérieur d’une galerie d’art emplie de sculptures et de textiles africains. Si vous désirez goûter à la vie urbaine, allez au Bar & Restaurant Youth Monument (Jonction de Westfield, Serrekunda). Ce restaurant animé sert de la bière à petit prix et des mets grillés simples, et si par hasard vous vous trouvez là le bon jour, vous aurez peut-être la chance de profiter d’un concert au Jokor, le club de music live tout proche.
VIE NOCTURNE
Le nightclub populaire Calabash (Route de Palma Rima, Kololi), qui accueille à l’occasion de grands noms de la musique de toute la Gambie et du Sénégal, dispose également d’un restaurant au rez-de-chaussée et d’une terrasse avec bar sur le toit. Si vous êtes à l’affût d’un petit endroit typique le long de la plage avec un jardin soigné, des hamacs et un restaurant sans manières, Leybato (près de la route de l’Atlantique, Fajara) est tout à fait recommandé pour un verre tôt dans la soirée.
