Radio Waves Simply Red British soul band Simply Red has enjoyed a long and illustrious career, selling 50 million albums worldwide over a 25-year period. Named after lead singer Mick Hucknall’s hair colour, the band’s first hit ‘Holding Back the Years’ showed off their characteristic lounge-jazz sound, although commercial success really came with the release of their third album, A New Flame, in 1989. Pictured throughout the 90s surrounded by supermodels and Hollywood actors, Hucknall’s sudden high profile threatened to damage the band’s cohesion, particularly when he declared in 1991 that Simply Red was “essentially a solo project”. Yet with the release of Stars, bestselling album for two years running in Europe and the UK, their staying power was confirmed, and in 1995 they enjoyed their first UK number one with dance-influenced track ‘Fairground’. The band announced their split last year but will continue to tour in 2010.

Le groupe britannique Simply Red a une longue et illustre carrière à son actif, avec pas moins de 50 millions d’albums vendus dans le monde en 25 ans. Le nom « Simply Red » fait référence à la couleur rousse des cheveux du chanteur fondateur du groupe Mick Hucknall. Simply Red connaît un premier grand succès avec son titre Holding Back the Years qui impose un son lounge-jazz caractéristique, mais la véritable réussite commerciale ne vient qu’après le lancement du troisième album, A New Flame, en 1989. Photographié durant toute la décennie 90 aux côtés de super modèles et d’acteurs d’Hollywood, Hucknall, par sa fulgurante ascension représentait une menace pour la cohésion de groupe, et plus particulièrement lorsqu’il déclara en 1991 que Simply Red était « essentiellement un projet en solo ». Mais cependant après la sortie de Stars, meilleure vente en Europe et aux Royaume-Uni durant deux ans, le groupe confirme sa position dominante dans le monde musical et, en 1995, il est en tête des charts au Royaume-Uni avec son morceau Fairground d’influence danse. Après avoir annoncé sa séparation l’année dernière, le groupe poursuivra toutefois une tournée en 2010.

Classical Portrait Brussels Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Flanders Established in 1935, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra describes itself as a ‘musical chameleon’ and rightly so. With its hugely diverse musical repertoire stretching from the classical and romantic to the contemporary, it reflects the aims of conductor Michel Tabachnik. Tabachnik is dedicated to narrowing the gap between the general public and contemporary music. He achieves this by combining the classical orchestral repertoire with 20th-century music, including compositions written for film. Originally known as the Flemish Radio Orchestra, the new name ‘Brussels Philharmonic’ highlights the orchestra’s close ties to the Belgian capital, though it comprises musicians from Belgium and beyond. The orchestra’s links to public broadcasting are strong and it works closely with radio and television. It also participates in the classicLive.com network, which makes various concerts available via live streaming; a move towards Tabachnik’s initiative of making orchestral music more accessible.

Fondé en 1935, l’Orchestre Philarmonique de Bruxelles se décrit selon ses propres termes comme un « caméléon musical » et rien n’est plus exact. Son vaste et éclectique répertoire musical, qui va du classique et du romantique jusqu’au contemporain, reflète les choix de son chef d’orchestre Michel Tabachnik. Ce dernier souhaite en effet réduire l’écart entre le grand public et la musique contemporaine. Pour y parvenir, il combine le répertoire de l’orchestration classique avec des compositions du XXe siècle, dont des musiques de films. Connu à l’origine comme l’Orchestre de la Radio Flamande, la nouvelle dénomination « Philharmonique de Bruxelles » met en évidence les liens étroits de l’orchestre avec la capitale belge, bien qu’il se compose de musiciens venus de toute la Belgique et d’ailleurs. Les relations de la Philarmonique avec les émetteurs de la radio et de la télévision publiques sont également très proches. La formation participe notamment au réseau classicLive.com, qui offre une connexion aux concerts via live streaming, une initiative soutenue par Tabachnik pour rendre la musique orchestrale encore plus accessible.
