Mame Diène (32), the founder of Bioessence Laboratories based in Dakar
I decided to found Bioessence Laboratories while in the USA for a natural products expo. A large American company asked me to source shea butter from Senegal for them. Having seen the huge trend for natural products, I realised there was a gap in the market, so I created Bioessence with my mother. Production started in 2007.
I take inspiration from Senegalese traditions. Ancestral beauty practices here are very much ritualised, so we try to see why they work and formulate our products based on this knowledge. Our products are organic [naturally so, as the ingredients still grow wild].
Winning the Cartier Women’s Initiative Award was an amazing opportunity. I also see it as giving hope to young people like me (particularly young, female entrepreneurs) and that there are possibilities to develop employment locally.
The Prime Minister of Senegal formally recognised my efforts in the development and improvement of the status of Senegalese women. Bioessence works in Kédougou, which is the least-developed area of Senegal. Almost a thousand people work on our projects there [which consist mainly of baobab and shea harvesting]. One of my major successes is the role Bioessence has had in helping some of the poorest families in Senegal to make a living.

J’ai décidé de lancer les Laboratoires Bioessence lorsque je me trouvais au Etats-Unis dans un salon professionnel de produits naturels. Une grande compagnie américaine m’a demandé de les approvisionner en beurre de karité provenant du Sénégal.
Je m’inspire des traditions du Sénégal. Ici, les pratiques ancestrales de beauté sont très ritualisées, nous essayons donc de voir comment cela fonctionne et nous créons nos produits sur base de cette connaissance. Nos produits sont organiques [naturels donc, parce qu’ils sont encore cultivés de façon artisanale].
Être lauréate du Prix Cartier Women’s Initiative fut une fantastique opportunité. Je vois que cela suscite aussi de l’espoir pour de jeunes professionnels comme moi (plus particulièrement les jeunes entrepreneuses) et que cela encourage les possibilités de développement de l’emploi au niveau local.
Le premier ministre du Sénégal a solennellement reconnu mes efforts dans le développement et l’amélioration du statut des femmes sénégalaises. Bioessence travaille à Kédougou, la région la moins développée du Sénégal. Près d’un millier de personnes travaillent sur nos projets [principalement dans la culture des baobabs et des karités]. Le rôle de Bioessence dans le soutien à certaines des familles les plus pauvres du Sénégal, leur donnant un moyen de subsistance, est l’un de mes plus grands succès.

Ik besloot in 2005 Bioessence Laboratories op te richten toen ik in de VS voor een expo over natuurlijke producten was. Een groot Amerikaans bedrijf vroeg me voor hen sheaboter uit Senegal te zoeken.
Ik haal inspiratie uit Senegalese tradities. Schoonheidstradities van onze voorouders zijn vooral rituelen, dus we proberen te achterhalen waarom het werkt en we formuleren onze producten gebaseerd op deze kennis. Onze producten zijn organisch [natuurlijk, want ze groeien nog steeds in het wild].
De Cartier Women’s Initiative Award winnen was een ongelooflijke kans. Ik zie het ook als een manier om hoop te geven aan jonge mensen zoals ik (in het bijzonder jonge vrouwelijke ondernemers) en dat er mogelijkheden zijn om lokaal de werkgelegenheid te ontwikkelen.
Ik heb een formele erkenning gekregen van de Eerste Minister van Senegal voor mijn inspanningen voor de ontwikkeling en verbetering van de status van Senegalese vrouwen. Bioessence werkt in Kédougou, het minst ontwikkelde gebied in Senegal. Bijna duizend vrouwen werken er bij onze projecten [die vooral bestaan uit de oogst van baobab en shea]. Eén van mijn grootste successen is de rol die Bioessence heeft gespeeld bij het helpen van de armste families in Senegal om inkomsten te vergaren.
