Jazz pianist Joe Sample has enjoyed a career spanning four decades, both as a solo artist and as part of influential jazz-funk band The Crusaders. As a founding member, Sample’s talent on the piano added to the group’s characteristic hard bop-style jazz. Their first album, Freedom Sounds, was released in 1961 to huge acclaim, and over the next three decades they scored gold and platinum albums. What’s more, after more than 10 years away from the charts, The Crusaders bounced back in 2003 with the reunion album Rural Renewal, securing Sample a place as a bestseller in jazz history.
Alongside the success of his group, Sample continued to record his own music, performing with musical legends such as Marvin Gaye and Eric Clapton. His first solo recording, Fancy Dance, was released in 1969, which preceded a slew of hits – the most recent being 2008’s No Regrets, with vocalist Randy Crawford.

Singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones shook up the music industry in 1979 with the release of her eponymous album featuring the hit jazz-pop single ‘Chuck E’s In Love’. A year later she received five nominations at the Grammy Awards, winning best new artist for her characteristic sound. Her follow-up album in 1981, Pirates, was also a huge commercial success, reaching number five in the US Billboard 200. After a fêted debut, however, her popularity waned as she developed a more experimental sound throughout the 1980s and 90s – but she continues to record music, her latest release being Balm in Gilead in November last year. Time magazine famously dubbed her ‘The Duchess Of Coolsville’, a soubriquet derived from her raucous and theatrical presence, which has stuck with Jones throughout her three-decade career.
