Chris Hatherill discovers how a simple text messaging service is transforming the fortunes of Rwandan farmers
Across Africa, the rapid growth of mobile phone use has created varied opportunities to use the new technology to help local people. Now, ordinary Rwandans are set to benefit, with the expansion of the Esoko price-tracking system. Dubbed ‘eRwanda’ locally, the service works by allowing farmers to check crop prices, receive market updates and even check the weather forecast via SMS.
“This system will make it easy for small farmers to join up and collectively market and sell their produce,” explains Wilson Muyenzi, coordinator of eRwanda. Texts keep individuals and local collectives updated, helping them to cut out middlemen and unscrupulous buyers. A joint initiative between the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and telecom operators MTN, Rwandatel and Tigo, the system is being expanded to include pest and disease information – all in real time.
In Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mali and
Togo, farmers are already benefiting from the technology. Prosper Biche, a
farmer from Kpandai in Ghana, says of the Esoko Voices blog: “Before Esoko
we didn’t know the prices. We just sent our products to market when they were
ready. Now we know the prices, and also when to sell our products.”

En Afrique, le téléphone portable est le fer de lance du développement technologique. C’est en effet via le mobile que de nombreux services pratiques sont offerts aux populations locales. Aujourd’hui, c’est au tour des Rwandais de profiter de cette révolution des télécommunications, avec l’accès à la plateforme de données sur les prix de la société Esoko.
Baptisé ‘eRwanda’, le système d’Esoko assure un flux rapide d’informations sur l’agriculture par SMS, en diffusant des alertes sur le cours des récoltes, des actualités sur les marchés ou même des prévisions météorologiques.
Ce système rendra la vie plus facile aux paysans, qui pourront se regrouper et vendre leurs produits en coopérative en fonction des opportunités du marché » explique Wilson Muyenzi, coordinateur de eRwanda. Les textos envoyés aux petits producteurs et aux collectivités locales transmettent des informations vitales, leur permettant par la même occasion d’éviter les intermédiaires et les acheteurs peu scrupuleux. Une initiative conjointe entre le Ministère rwandais de l’Agriculture et les opérateurs de téléphonie mobile, Rwandatel et Tigo, a en outre permis d’élargir les outils proposés dans le cadre de ce système, avec des informations en temps réel sur la peste et d’autres maladies.
Au Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Mali et Togo, les agriculteurs bénéficient déjà de cette technologie.

Overal in Afrika heeft de snelle toename van het gebruik van mobiele telefoons opportuniteiten gecreëerd om met deze nieuwe technologie de plaatselijke bevolking te helpen.
Gewone Rwandezen zullen voortaan voordeel kunnen halen uit de uitbreiding van het Esoko prijs-tracking systeem. Plaatselijk bekend onder de naam ‘eRwanda’, laat dit systeem de boeren toe om de kropprijzen na te gaan, marktupdates te ontvangen en zelfs weersvoorspellingen te ontvangen via SMS.
“Dit systeem moet het voor kleine boeren gemakkelijker maken om zich te verenigen, samen hun producten op de markt te brengen en ze te verkopen”, aldus Wilson Muyenzi, coördinator van eRwanda. De tekstberichten houden particuliere boeren en lokale collectieve initiatieven voortdurend up-to-date, waardoor ze tussenpersonen en oneerlijke kopers zoveel mogelijk kunnen uitsluiten. Het systeem, een gedeeld initiatief van het Rwandese Ministerie van Landbouw en de telecomoperatoren MTN, Rwandatel en Tigo, zal eveneens informatie vrijgeven over de pest en andere ziekten – alles in real time. Boeren uit Benin, Burkina Faso, Kameroen, Ghana, Ivoorkust, Madagaskar, Mali en Togo ondervinden reeds de voordelen van deze technologie. Prosper Biche, een boer uit Kpandai in Ghana, schrijft het volgende op de blog van Esoko Voices: “Voor Esoko hadden we geen idee van de prijzen. We stuurden enkel onze producten op naar de markt als ze eenmaal klaar waren. Nu kennen we de prijzen en weten we ook wanneer we onze producten precies moeten verkopen”.
