Willy Gils is Chief Operating Officer of Waterleau Group, a ‘one-stop shop’ for environmental solutions and services for industry and municipalities
What does your company do?
Waterleau group is an important global player in the environmental sector. It has a portfolio of environmental processes and technologies, such as the Lucas waste water treatment system and air treatment systems as well as patented technologies for biosolids (sludges), waste (chemical, toxic, hospital, household) and renewable energy.
In which African countries does your company operate?
We are currently involved with projects in Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Uganda as well as in Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville. Some of these projects are for the authorities and co-funded by the Belgian Development Aid, but most of the others are for major breweries, such as Heineken and Diageo-Guinness.
What advice would you give on how to facilitate trading with African clients/operate a business in an African country?
Consider all stakeholders and look for a win-win situation – to that end we always involve local subcontractors and limit the Belgian presence to a minimum. We also endeavour to create employment opportunities for the local community.
How do you see the future for doing business in Africa?
We have been able to create key references all over Africa. These references will help us obtain new contracts both on this continent and elsewhere in the world.

Que fait votre compagnie?
Le Groupe Waterleau est un acteur essentiel au niveau mondial dans le secteur environnemental. Ses activités sont concentrées sur les installations et les technologies de traitement de l’air industriel et de l’eau, comme le système Lucas ainsi que des technologies patentées pour le traitement et la gestion des biosolides (boues), des déchets (chimiques, toxiques, hospitaliers, ménagers) et des énergies renouvelables.
Dans quels pays d’Afrique êtes-vous opérationnels?
A l’heure actuelle, nous sommes présents dans des projets au Maroc, en République Démocratique du Congo, au Kenya et en Ouganda ainsi qu’en Tunisie, en Algérie, en Egypte, au Nigeria et au Congo Brazzaville. Certaines de nos activités sont développées conjointement avec les autorités locales et co-fi nancées par le Ministère belge d’Aide au Développement, les autres concernent de grandes brasseries, telles que Heineken et Diageo-Guinness.
Quel conseil donneriezvous à ceux qui voudraient établir des relations commerciales avec l’Afrique?
Prenez en considération toutes les parties dans un projet et cherchez à établir une situation win-win. Dans cette optique, nous impliquons toujours les sous-contractants locaux et nous limitons l’intervention belge au minimum. Nous nous efforçons également de créer des opportunités d’emploi au sein des communautés locales.
Comment voyez-vous l’évolution de votre activité en Afrique?
Nous avons réussi à nous établir comme une solide référence à travers le continent africain. Nos réalisations nous aideront à obtenir de nouveaux contrats en Afrique (mais aussi dans d’autres parties du monde).

Wat doet uw bedrijf?
Waterleau Group is een belangrijke wereldspeler in de milieusector. We bieden allerhande milieuprocedés en -technologieën aan, zoals het Lucas-systeem voor behandeling van afvalwater, luchtzuiveringssystemen en gepatenteerde technologieën voor biosolids (slib), afval (chemisch, giftig, ziekenhuis, huishoudelijk) en hernieuwbare energie.
In welke Afrikaanse landen is uw bedrijf actief?
Wij zijn betrokken bij projecten in Marokko, de Democratische Republiek Congo, Kenia en Oeganda, maar ook Tunesië, Algerije, Egypte, Nigeria en Congo-Brazzaville. Soms werken we voor de overheid met medefi nanciering door Belgische Ontwikkelingshulp, maar de meeste projecten zijn in opdracht van grote brouwerijen, zoals Heineken en Diageo-Guinness.
Welk advies zou u geven om de handel met Afrikaanse klanten te vergemakkelijken/een bedrijf te runnen in een Afrikaans land?
Houd rekening met alle belanghebbende partijen en ga voor een win-winsituatie. Daarom betrekken wij lokale onderaannemers en beperken we de Belgische aanwezigheid tot een minimum. Ook werkgelegenheid creëren voor de lokale gemeenschap is een streefdoel.
Hoe ziet u de toekomst van zakendoen in Afrika?
Wij zijn erin geslaagd in heel Afrika belangrijke referenties op te bouwen. Die zullen ons helpen nieuwe contracten binnen te halen, niet alleen in Afrika maar ook elders in de wereld.

War child Netherlands
In the 20th century, almost 60 million people died as a result of war, while in the past 10 years war has also claimed the lives of over 1.5 million children, and has rendered a further four million children disabled for life. War Child Netherlands is a Dutch non-profit organisation, with headquarters in Amsterdam, that works to support children affected by armed conflicts in Africa, The Balkans, The Caucasus, Asia, and Latin America. It focuses on strengthening protective factors in the environment and specializes in providing psycho-social assistance to children in former war zones, using a wide range of creative methods.
In African countries, such as Sierra Leone, War Child has various refugee centres and schools in the capital Freetown and in Port Loko, where young people including former child soldiers, girls who have been victims of sexual abuse and children who have suffered lasting injuries such as amputations as a result of war, learn to express their emotions through music and sports activities.

In de 20ste eeuw stierven bijna 60 miljoen mensen als gevolg van oorlog. De laatste 10 jaar werden meer dan 1,5 miljoen kinderen gedood tijdens oorlogen en vier miljoen kinderen raakten gehandicapt.
War Child NL is een Nederlandse non-profi torganisatie die kinderen getroffen door gewapende confl icten wil ondersteunen. Met hoofdzetel in Amsterdam leidt War Child NL projecten in Afrika, de Balkan, de Kaukasus, Azië en Latijns-Amerika. Het legt de nadruk op de beschermende elementen in de leefwereld van de kinderen en is gespecialiseerd in psychosociale bijstand via een creatieve aanpak.
In Afrikaanse landen, zoals Sierra Leone, heeft War Child verscheidene vluchtelingencentra en scholen in de hoofdstad Freetown en in Port Loko, waar jonge mensen leren hun emoties uit te drukken via muziek en sportactiviteiten. Het gaat om voormalige kindsoldaten, slachtoffers van seksueel misbruik en kinderen met blijvende verwondingen, zoals amputaties.

The African eco footprint In 1996, Canadian ecologists William Rees and Mathew Wackernagel came up with the term ‘Eco Footprint’, which is used to describe the impact a person’s lifestyle leaves on the environment. It’s a way of measuring how much land and water humans need to produce the resources they use and to absorb the waste they create. Today humanity’s ecological footprint is 23 per cent larger than that which the planet can generate. But by measuring the ecological footprint of a population (person, a nation, or humanity) individuals and authorities can better assess and manage the planet’s ecological assets. This year, the new fact book Africa’s Ecological Footprint: Human Well-Being and Biological Capital is the first step towards the exploration of whether Eco Footprint analysis in African countries can lead to more successful human development strategies.
