Keep fit in Kenya

So, the new year is in full swing and once again I have done absolutely nothing about my resolution to get fit. Except, that is, for investing in a fabulous new gym kit. But, while giving my brain a serious work out researching stories for the next issue of b.spirit! I stumbled across news of a wild fitness camp near Watamu in Kenya. Genius. I can’t imagine anything more pleasurable than discovering my inner panther by running alongside the Indian Ocean, swimming in mangrove creeks and eating deliciously healthy local food. Even the prospect of a boxercise class watched by monkeys has got my adrenaline pumping. Now all I need is someone to sign off my holiday form, then it’s bye-bye office tan and hello African sun.

It’s been a while since we have had a new hotel to review in Monrovia, but all that’s about to change. RLJ Kendeja Resort and Villas on the outskirts of the Liberian capital is due to open imminently and has certainly caught our attention. Spanning across 13 acres the five-star ocean-front resort, which features villa-style rooms with flat screen TVs, a spa and fitness center and a swimming pool is heralding a new style of luxury to Monrovia. We are particularly intrigued by the signature restaurant, which is simply called Posh. Whether this alludes to the nosh or the clientele we have yet to find out. But we will. So stay tuned as one of our locally-based writers is poised and ready to review the hotel for b.spirit!.

The Congo in London

London is awash with pop up establishments from shops to galleries and bars to restaurants. But one of the latest ventures that is absolutely worth a mention is The Double Club, 7 Torrens Street, London, EC1. The brainchild of German artist Carsten Holler and top fashion label Prada, this bar-cum-eatery is a brilliant coming together of African (specifically Congolese) and Western art, food, drink and entertainment. Everything is done in parallel from the décor to the music – think Andy Warhol prints alongside works of art by Congolese artist Mosengwo Kejwamfi and local African beers alongside cosmopolitan cocktails. So, for as long as it’s popped up (The Double Club is only open till May) I can get my fill of goat brochette, primus beer and Kinshasa beats without burning up my carbon footprint taking regular flights to the DRC.
