Patrick Roofthooft, Country Manager in Cameroon, on what attracted him to the world of aviation and why teamwork is the key to success
I’ve been in the aviation business since 1993, when I first started a student job as a cabin cleaner at Brussels airport. At the time I didn’ t really expect that my studies in Political Science would prepare me for a career in the sector, but after having worked in various dif ferent areas, and in countries as diverse as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Liberia and Guinea, I’m still here 13 years later as the SN Country Manager for Cameroon.
One of the things that has always attracted me to the world of aviation is its magical quality – to fly has been one of man’s dreams, from the legend of Icarus to the pioneers of civil aviation of over a century ago. Flying makes the world smaller and brings people and places together, whether they’re travelling for tourism, business, studies or simply in search of a better life. If my job today is a bit like an ambassador for my company and my country, it’s also an excellent adventure.
Of course, I’m no longer able to personally wave hello or goodbye to our pilots at each landing or take-off – today, I’m more responsible for managing the individual processes that make up the dream. But to make the dream you need a team, and it’s here that my colleagues’ work makes me proud of them. From obtaining the necessary authorisation to fly from one country to another, through to listening to passengers’ individual requirements and providing the service that caters to those needs, calculating weights and balances, routes and fuel – and ensuring technical and safety excellence, it’s the quality of the team that makes all the difference.
One of the challenges of my job is to do my part to ensure the constant and future presence of SN in our destinations. In succeeding at that challenge, I consider I’m playing a part in contributing day in, day out not only to the well-being of our passengers, but also to that of my 2,000 SN colleagues and their families around the world.
But even after 13 years in the business, I’m stil l very much in the thick of things and I’m always dreaming of ways we can do our job better. Because, no matter what role I actually fulfil, our motto is always: ‘Passionate about you’ and I’d like to thank you, our passengers, for the faith you have in my colleagues and myself that allow us to continue dreaming.

Patrick Roofthooft, SN’s Country Manager in Kameroen, over wat hem boeit in de luchtvaartwereld en waarom teamwork de sleutel is tot succes
Ik ben sinds 1993 actief in de luchtvaartsector, waar ik in m’n studententijd aan de sl ‘vliegtuig schoonmaker’ op de luchthaven van Brussel. Op dat moment hield ik er niet echt rekening mee dat mijn studies Politieke Wetenschappen me zouden voorbereiden op een loopbaan in die sector. Maar na allerhande functies in verscheidene landen zoals de Democratisc he Republiek Congo, Sierra Leone, Oeganda, Liberia en Guinea, ben ik 13 jaar later nog steeds actief bij SN als Country Manager voor Kameroen.
Een van de dingen die me altijd heef t aangetrokken tot de luchtvaartwereld is de magie van het vliegen. De mogelijkheid om in de lucht te blijven is altijd een droom geweest van de mensheid, sinds de legende van Icarus tot de pioniers van de burgerluchtvaart , nu al meer dan een eeuw geleden. Vliegen maakt de wereld kleiner en brengt mensen en plaatsen samen. Het maakt niet uit of u reist als toerist, zakenman/-vrouw, student of gewoon op zoek bent naar een beter leven. Ik wil in mijn huidige fun ctie graag ambassadeur zijn voor mijn bedrijf en mijn land. Elke dag opnieuw is dat een prachtig avontuur!
Uiteraard is het niet mogelijk om steeds onze piloten te begroeten bij elke landing of vertrek. Ondertussen ben ik verantwoordelijk voor het beheer van de individuele processen die de droom van het vliegen waarmaken. Maar om een droom te realiseren heb je een team nodig en mijn collega’s geven me alle reden om trots op hen te zijn. De goedkeuring ve rkrijgen om van het ene land naar het andere te vliegen, l uisteren naar de individuele behoeften van de passagiers en een dienst verlenen die daarop inspeelt, gewicht en balans, vluchtroutes en brandstof ber ekenen, en natuurlijk een uitmuntende techniek en veiligheid garanderen,… In al deze domei nen maakt de kwaliteit van het team het hele verschil.
Eén van de uitdagingen in mijn job is bij te dragen tot een constante en toekomstige aanwezigheid van SN op onze bestemmingen. Door te slagen in dat opzet kan ik dag in dag uit mijn steentje bijdragen tot het welzijn van onze passagiers, maar ook tot het welzijn van mijn 2000 SN-collega’s en hun gezin overal ter wereld.
Na 13 jaar in de sector heb ik een sterke voeli ng met de business en droom ik nog steeds over nieuwe manieren om het nog beter te doen. Want welke rol ik ook vervul, ons motto blijft ‘Passionate about you’! Ik wil u, onz e passagiers, graag bedanken voor het vertrouwen dat u stelt in mij en mijn collega’s en voor de kans die u ons biedt om te blijven dromen.
