With new bars and restaurants springing up around town, we have our eye on Tides, a Mamba Point bar with a great decking area that’s set to open this year. And don’t miss out on staples such as the laid-back Golden Beach (near the UN building in Sinkor), the Royal Hotel’s sushi bar (Tubman Boulevard), with its excellent spicy tuna sashimi salad, and Diana’s (Center Street), which has been serving hamburgers since the 1970s.
Life through a lens
Filmmakers have been flocking to Liberia’s shores lately. Some productions, such as the controversial Vice Guide to Liberia, haven’t gone down well with locals or expats, but there are a few films set in post-conflict Liberia worth seeing: Sliding Liberia, a surf documentary filmed shortly after the end of the war; the award-winning Pray the Devil Back to Hell, narrated by Angélique Kidjo; and Iron Ladies of Liberia, which goes behind the scenes with president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
Chill-out zones
Need to chill out and relax? A weekend in Robertsport, 50km north, might be the remedy, where you can lay your head at Nana’s Lodge, with luxury tents suspended above the beach. But if you have to stay near town, treat yourself to an afternoon by the pool at the Kendeja Resort, or try a yoga session at Ocean View Apartments in Sinkor (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Way to go
Robertsfield International Airport is 58km east of Monrovia. Payment in US dollars of between $50 (€46) and $80 (€73) is expected for the 90-minute taxi ride into town. Arranging a pick-up in advance is recommended, particularly at night – your hotel should be able to suggest a reliable driver.

Les réalisateurs ont littéralement fait escale sur les rivages du Liberia.
