The AIDS Support Organization
TASO is a community-based initiative offering treatment, care and support to people living with HIV and AIDS in Uganda. Founded by 16 individuals who were either infected or affected by the disease, TASO – which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month – has grown into the largest such organisation in sub-Saharan Africa with more than 80,000 clients and an annual budget of $22m. Its model, which has been replicated across Africa and other areas hit by the epidemic, encourages people with HIV and AIDS to “live positively” by not infecting others, while urging communities to look after those with the disease to prevent stigma and discrimination.

Alex Byarugaba, proprietor of Plastic Recycling Industries Limited, a new firm that recycles waste in the Ugandan capital, Kampala – making money and saving the environment at the same time. The Ugandan government recently banned very thin plastic shopping bags and introduced a 120% tax on thicker ones to stem the environmental impact of plastic waste
What’s the overall vision of your company?
The vision is both commercial and environmental. The Dutch government has sponsored the project by giving $1m, and we’re supposed to collect 650 tonnes of plastic in the first year, ending 31 December. We’ve already met more than half that target. We also have local investors in the project, but no government funding.
How exactly does it work?
Plastic bottles are collected through schools, NGOs, scavengers and people who drop in and bring them to us. The collection itself is a whole study. We then recycle the bottles and export them to China. There’s local demand, but most people can’t afford our recycled products. We export to China because they can add value to the recycled plastic.
When operating at full capacity, our plant will directly employ 40 people, half of them women. Already it’s indirectly supporting hundreds of low-income earners who are part of the supply chain.
How much of a problem is plastic waste in Uganda?
It’s difficult to quantify the problem but plastic has become a nuisance on the streets, blocking drainage channels and leading to flooding. Dangers also arise from people reusing the bottles and filling them with liquids they then sell. There are sanitary issues with that. Also, it would be fine if they were just filling them with water, but if they use other liquids the plastic can react with the acidic contents and cause side effects.
ONE TO WATCH
The Rwandan Youth Information Community Organisation (rYico), founded in 2003, supports and empowers vulnerable young people, many of them orphaned by the 1994 genocide. It does this through Centre Marembo, a youth resource centre based in the capital, Kigali.
The organisation aims to increase social and cultural understanding about Rwanda within the UK, through cultural exchange and education. It also plans to start a counselling service offering advice on sexual and reproductive health, as well as life and vocational skills training.

L’ Organisation de soutien aux malades du SIDA
TASO/SIDA est une initiative communautaire destinée à offrir des traitements, des soins et un soutien aux malades atteints du virus du VIH et du SIDA en Ouganda. Fondée par 16 individus soit touchés par la maladie soit ayant déjà développé la maladie, TASO – qui célèbre son 20e anniversaire ce mois-ci – est devenue la plus grande organisation de ce genre en Afrique sub-saharienne avec plus de 80 000 membres et un budget annuel de $22millions. Son modèle, qui a déjà été reproduit à travers l’Afrique et d’autres zones géographiques touchées par l’épidémie, encourage les personnes touchées par le HIV et le SIDA à “vivre de façon positive” en évitant d’infecter leur partenaire. L’organisation pousse également les communautés à s’occuper de leurs malades afin d’éviter la stigmatisation et la discrimination.

Quelle est la vision globale de votre compagnie?
Notre vision est à la fois commerciale et environnementale. Le gouvernement hollandais a sponsorisé le projet en nous donnant $1million, et nous sommes censés récolter 650 tonnes de plastique au cours de la première année, qui se termine le 31 décembre. Nous avons déjà réussi à réaliser la moitié de notre objectif. Des investisseurs locaux sont également investis dans le projet, mais il n’y a aucun fonds du gouvernement.
Comment cela fonctionne-t-il exactement?
Les bouteilles en plastique sont récupérées dans les écoles, auprès des ONG, des éboueurs et des gens qui viennent nous les déposer. La collecte en soi est un réel sujet d’étude. Nous recyclons alors les bouteilles et nous les exportons vers la Chine. Il existe une demande locale, mais la plupart des gens ne peuvent pas se permettre nos produits recyclés. Nous exportons vers la Chine parce qu’ils peuvent ajouter une réelle valeur au plastique recyclé. Lorsque nous serons à notre capacité maximale, notre usine emploiera directement 40 personnes, dont la moitié de femmes. A l’heure actuelle, notre activité soutient déjà indirectement des centaines de personnes à bas revenus qui font partie de la chaîne de production.
Quelle est l’ampleur du problème des déchets plastiques en Ouganda?
Il est difficile de quantifier le problème, mais le plastique est devenu une réelle nuisance dans les rues, bloquant les canalisations, ce qui provoque des inondations. Les dangers viennent également des personnes qui réutilisent les bouteilles et les remplissent de liquides qu’ils vendent. On parle alors dans ce cas de problèmes d’ordre sanitaire. Ce serait encore passable s’ils ne les remplissaient que d’eau, mais s’ils utilisent d’autres produits liquides, le plastique peut réagir avec les contenus acides et causer des effets secondaires.

Le Rwandan Youth Information Community Organisation (rYico), fondée en 2003, soutient les jeunes vulnérables, un grand nombre d’entre eux étant devenus orphelins suite au génocide de 1994. Ses activités sont coordonnées par le Centre Marembo, un centre d’aide à la jeunesse basé dans la capitale, Kigali.
L’organisation vise à accroître le bien-être social et une meilleure compréhension de la culture du Rwanda au Royaume-Uni, à travers des échanges culturels et des programmes d’éducation. Elle prévoit aussi le démarrage d’un service de conseil sur la sexualité et le planning familial, ainsi que des formations sur les compétences requises dans le domaine du bénévolat.

C’est parfait de pouvoir prendre votre ordinateur portable lors de vos déplacements d’affaires, mais la souris peut s’avérer un problème – soit vous ne l’emportez pas avec vous et vous utilisez le touchpad, peu précis, ou alors vous devez composer avec un câble, ce qui est parfois agaçant.
La souris Razer Pro|Click Mobile n’est pas reliée à un câble (on devrait peut-être plutôt l’appeler le hamster), ce qui facilite le transport, et elle s’adapte aux droitiers aussi bien qu’aux gauchers. Wat is de filosofie van uw bedrijf ?
We zijn zowel commercieel als milieubewust. De Nederlandse regering steunt het project met $ 1 miljoen en tegen 31 december moeten we 650 ton plastic hebben opgehaald. We zitten nu al ver over de helft. Er zijn ook een aantal lokale investeerders, maar we doen het zonder overheidssteun.
Hoe gaat u precies tewerk?
We zamelen plastic flessen in via scholen, NGO’s, mensen die vuilnis doorzoeken of hun eigen flessen inleveren. Vervolgens recycleren we de flessen en exporteren we ze naar China. Er is een lokale vraag, maar de meeste mensen kunnen onze gerecycleerde producten niet betalen. We exporteren naar China omdat zij het gerecycleerde plastic een meerwaarde kunnen geven. Op volle capaciteit zal de fabriek werk verschaffen aan 40 mensen, van wie de helft vrouwen. Nu als ondersteunt ze rechtstreeks honderden gezinnen met een laag inkomen, die deel uitmaken van de toeleveringsketen.
Hoe groot is het probleem van plastic afval in Oeganda?
Dat valt moeilijk te meten, maar plastic begint echt hinderlijk te worden op straat. Het verstopt afvoerkanalen en veroorzaakt overstromingen. Gevaarlijk zijn ook de mensen die flessen opnieuw vullen om ze dan te verkopen. Uiteraard kan dat gezondheidsproblemen opleveren. Het zou nog aanvaardbaar zijn als ze de flessen alleen met water vulden, maar bij gebruik van andere vloeistoffen kan het plastic reageren op de aanwezige zuren en bijwerkingen veroorzaken.
OPMERKELIJK
De Rwandese Youth Information Community Organisation (rYico), opgericht in 2003, ondersteunt en begeleidt kwetsbare jongeren, van wie velen wees werden tijdens de genocide van 1994. Dat gebeurt vanuit het Centre Marembo, een jongerenhuis in de hoofdstad Kigali.
De organisatie wil de sociale en culturele kennis over Rwanda in het Verenigd Koninkrijk vergroten via culturele uitwisselingen en opvoeding. Het plant ook een adviesdienst voor seksuele voorlichting en gezinsbegeleiding, en trainingen in sociale en professionele vaardigheden.
