Entebbe & Kampala City Guide
Edris Kisambira takes a look around Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and the lakeside town of Entebbe, the country’s first administrative headquarters after independence
Entebbe International Airport is located near the town of Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria, 35km from the capital, Kampala. Entebbe was the administrative seat of the British rulers before it was moved to Kampala. The town is quiet, slow and ideal for meetings and conferences. Kampala, on the other hand, is a rapidly expanding city that’s the commercial as well as administrative capital of Uganda. This November, Kampala hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Getting around
Around-the-clock airport taxis, emblazoned with sky-blue and yellow stripes, charge about US$20 (€14) for a ride to Kampala. Once in the capital, you have a number of options. Public transport passenger vans charge varying fares depending on where you want to go, but are usually less than 50¢. Motorcycle taxis, locally referred to as boda boda, are handy if you’re running late for an appointment, while ordinary cabs charge about $8.50 (€6), depending on distance.
Alternatively, call toll-free for a metered taxi. They will pick you up from wherever you may be. Better still, rent a car on a self-drive basis.

■ Splash the cash Kampala Serena Hotel (Kintu Road; from $375/€267), formerly the Nile Hotel, is an inspirational blend of five-star polish and pan-African panache. The hotel boasts a conference center, various restaurants (including Pearl of Africa, The Lakes and Explorer bistro), the In the Mist bar and the Maisha Spa and Health Club, with a large swimming pool.
Sheraton Kampala Hotel (Ternan Avenue; from $230/€164) is located in the heart of Kampala and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The 237-room newly renovated hotel offers patrons a bird’s eye view of Kampala. Try the Hippo Restaurant and have fun at the English-style Rhino Pub. Sheraton Kampala Hotel also has a well-known health club, Kidepo, 11 flexible meeting rooms, a ballroom and a special rooftop meeting area.
■ On a budget Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel Entebbe (off Portal Road, ; from $130/€93) is ideal if you don’t want to travel immediately to Kampala after your arrival at the airport. On offer are well-equipped conference facilities, high-speed internet access in all rooms, a swimming pool, saunas and a medical doctor on-call 24 hours a day.
Hotel Africana Kampala (2-4 Wampewo Avenue; from $90/€64) is one of the low-key hotels in Kampala but offers excellent service. Located on the edge of the central business hub, it’s a favorite for conferences given its many meeting rooms.
Eat out
■ Cheap and cheerful
Kampala’s central business district and Entebbe town are awash with restaurants offering dishes that range from African specialties to French fries. Each Ugandan region has its own cuisine. The most traditional foods are green bananas (matooke), sweet potatoes, cassava and yams, normally served with beef or chicken stew, groundnut (peanut) sauce, beans or peas. Kitoro, a suburb of Entebbe on the road to the airport, has good grilled chicken. Stop at Catch-21, order a beer and let the boys approach you. Don’t order chicken from the restaurant; the best cooks make it on homemade grills on the road.
■ Working lunch
Faze2 (10 Nakasero Road) offers Indian, Chinese and continental dishes. If the place is packed, above Nakasero Road you’ll find Nommo Gallery Restaurant (4 Victoria Avenue). Given its proximity to one of Uganda’s art galleries, you’ll be able to look at some of the art on show after lunch.
■ Impress a client
Sam’s Restaurant (78 Kampala Road) is great for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those who know and love their food can be found here. Haandi Kampala (1st Floor, Commercial Plaza, 7 Kampala Road) is located in the center of town and offers a wide range of specialty tandoori dishes.
■ Dinner for two
Fang Fang Restaurant (1st Floor, Communications House, Colville Street) is where you’ll find the best Chinese food. The service is great and the layout of the restaurant provides a lot of privacy for a romantic dinner.
Drink up
Two of Kampala’s most popular nightclubs are located just a few hundred metres apart in the city’s Industrial Area – Ange Noir/ Ange Mystique (77a 1st Street, Industrial Area) and Club Silk (15/17 1st Street, Industrial Area).
Uganda’s brewing industry is quite large and you can be sure to have an array of options to choose from, whether you prefer beer or spirits. Many international brands are also available. Kampala is safe at night, so you have the licence to roam (with people who know the city well) from one bar to the next.

Kasubi Tombs (www.kasubitombs.org) on the outskirts of Kampala house the remains of a number of kings of Buganda Kingdom, once the ruling group in the area. On a visit to the tombs you’ll learn a few things about the proud Baganda people, the biggest ethnic grouping in Uganda. In Entebbe, kill a few hours in the serene Botanical Gardens. Enjoy a takeaway lunch under the thick canopy of trees, cooled by the breeze off Lake Victoria.
■ In your lunch hour
The Crafts Village along Buganda Road in the central business district of Kampala is the best place to shop for anything African. Uganda produces a lot of good crafts, including mats, baskets, bags, beads, sandals, printed textiles, art paintings and wood carvings.
■ Further afield
If you have time on your hands, take a trip to Jinja, 80km east of Kampala. Here you can visit the source of the Nile, where some of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were scattered. The journey will give you the opportunity to see a bit of the country so you can understand what Sir Winston Churchill meant when he called Uganda the “Pearl of Africa”. If you don’t want to travel that far, visit Entebbe’s Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Lugard Avenue, https://uwec.ug/).

L’aéroport international d’Entebbe est situé près de la ville d’Entebbe, sur les rives du lac Victoria, à 35km de Kampala, la capitale. Entebbe était le siège administratif des dirigeants britanniques avant que celui-ci ne déménage à Kampala. C’est une ville tranquille; au rythme lent, idéale pour les meetings et conférences. À côté de cela, Kampala, capitale à la fois commerciale et administrative de l’Ouganda est une ville qui s’étend rapidement. En novembre, Kampala accueillera le Rassemblement des Chefs d’État du Commonwealth (CHOGM).
Se déplacer
Les taxis de l’aéroport, bleu ciel rayé de jaune, roulent 24h sur 24 et comptent environ 20$ US (14€) pour la course jusqu’à Kampala. Une fois dans la capitale, vous avez plusieurs options. Les minibus des transports publics proposent des tarifs qui varient selon votre destination mais coûtent en général moins de 50¢. Les boda boda, appellation locale de motos taxis, sont très pratiques si vous êtes en retard à un rendez-vous, et une course en taxi ordinaire revient à environ 8,50$ (6€), selon la distance.
Vous pouvez aussi appeler gratuitement un taxi à compteur. Blu-Cruise (tél. 0800 1 2583) et Yellow Taxi (tél. appel direct 145) viendront vous chercher où que vous soyez. Encore mieux : louez une voiture que vous conduisez vous-même.
■ Dépenser sans compter
Le Kampala Serena Hotel (Kintu Road; à partir de 375$/267€), remplaçant du Nile Hotel, est un mélange édifiant d’élégance cinq étoiles polonaise et panafricaine. L’hôtel s’enorgueillit d’un centre de conférence, de plusieurs restaurants (tels que le Pearl of Africa et Le Lakes and Explorer bistro), le bar In the Mist et le Maisha Spa and Health Club, en plus d’une vaste piscine.
Le Sheraton Kampala Hotel (Ternan Avenue; à partir de 230$/164€) est situé au cœur de Kampala et entouré de splendides jardins. L’hôtel, qui dispose de 237 chambres et vient tout juste d’être restauré, offre à ses clients une vue panoramique de Kampala. Essayez le Hippo Restaurant et allez vous détendre au Rhino Pub. L’Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel Entebbe (Sur Portal Road; à partir de 130$/93€) est idéal si vous ne souhaitez pas vous rendre immédiatement à Kampala dès votre arrivée à l’aéroport. Des locaux de conférence tout équipés sont proposés, de même qu’une connexion Internet à haut débit dans toutes les chambres, une piscine, des saunas et un médecin disponible par téléphone 24h sur 24.
L’hôtel Africana Kampala (2-4 Wampewo Avenue; à partir de 90$/64€) fait partie des hôtels plus discrets de Kampala mais propose d’excellents services. Situé en bordure du quartier des affaires, ses nombreuses salles de conférence en font un lieu favori pour ce type d’événements.
Où manger ?
■ Chaleureux et pas cher
Le quartier d’affaires au cœur de Kampala et la ville d’Entebbe regorgent de restaurants proposant des plats allant des spécialités africaines aux pommes frites. Chaque région de l’Ouganda possède sa propre cuisine. Parmi les aliments traditionnels, on trouve la banane verte (matooke), la patate douce, le manioc et l’igname, habituellement accompagnés de ragoût de poulet ou de bœuf, de sauce aux arachides (cacahuètes), de haricots ou de pois. À Kitoro, dans la banlieue d’Entebbe sur la route de l’aéroport, on trouve un très bon poulet grillé. Arrêtez-vous au Catch-21, demandez une bière et laissez les garçons vous approcher. Ne commandez pas de poulet au restaurant : les meilleurs cuisiniers le préparent sur des grills bricolés, au bord de la route.
■ Lunch d’affaires
Le Faze2 (10 Nakeso Road) sert des plats indiens, chinois et continentaux. Si l’endroit est bondé, juste au-dessus de Nakeso Road, vous trouverez le Nommo Gallery Restaurant (4 Victoria Avenue). Ce dernier étant tout proche de l’une des galeries d’art de l’Ouganda, vous pourrez ensuite aller jeter un œil à l’une ou l’autre exposition du moment.
■ Impressionnez vos clients
Le Sam’s Restaurant (78 Kampala Road) est parfait pour les petits déjeuners, lunchs et dîners. C’est ici que l’on trouve les vrais gastronomes. Le Haandi Kampala (1er étage, Commercial Plaza, 7 Kampala Road) se trouve au centre ville et propose une grande variété de spécialités tandoori.
Dîner pour deux
Le Fang Fang Restaurant (1er étage, Communications House, Colville Street) est celui où vous trouverez la meilleure cuisine chinoise. Le service y est impeccable et la disposition du restaurant offre une grande intimité pour les dîners en tête-à-tête.
Sortir le soir
Deux des night-clubs les plus populaires de Kampala se trouvent à seulement quelques centaines de mètres l’un de l’autre dans le quartier industriel – l’Ange Noir/Ange Mystique (77a 1st Street, Industrial Area) et le Club Silk (15/17 1st Street, Industrial Area).
L’industrie des boissons ougandaise est assez importante et vous pouvez être sûr d’avoir un éventail de choix, que vous préfériez la bière ou les alcools plus forts. On retrouve aussi de nombreuses marques internationales. Vous ne craignez rien à Kampala la nuit et pouvez donc errer librement d’un bar à l’autre (accompagné de personnes qui connaissent bien la ville).

■ Culture urbaine
Les tombes de Kasubi, à la limite de Kampala, abritent les restes de plusieurs rois du royaume du Buganda, qui dirigeaient autrefois la région. En allant visiter les tombes, vous en apprendrez davantage sur le fier peuple du Buganda, le plus grand groupe ethnique d’Ouganda. À Entebbe, si vous avez quelques heures à tuer, passez-les aux paisibles Jardins Botaniques. Savourez un lunch à emporter sous l’épaisse voûte des arbres, rafraîchie par la brise du lac Victoria.
■ Pendant votre pause lunch
Le Village des artisans, le long de Buganda Road dans le quartier des affaires de Kampala est le meilleur endroit pour tout ce qui est shopping africain. L’Ouganda produit beaucoup d’artisanat de bonne qualité, entre autres des nattes, des paniers, sacs, sandales, tissus imprimés, tableaux et gravures sur bois.
■ Pour aller plus loin
Si vous avez le temps, allez faire un tour du côté de Jinja, à 80km à l’est de Kampala. Là-bas, vous pourrez visiter la source du Nil, où a été dispersée une partie des cendres de Mahatma Gandhi. Cette excursion sera l’occasion de voir un peu de pays et de comprendre ce que voulait dire Winston Churchill lorsqu’il a appelé l’Ouganda la « Perle du Nil ». Si vous préférez ne pas trop vous éloigner, visitez l’Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Lugard Avenue).

Essentieel… Entebbe en Kampala
Entebbe International Airport ligt vlakbij de stad Entebbe aan de oevers van het Victoriameer, op 35 km van de Oegandese hoofdstad Kampala. Terwijl in Entebbe het leven rustig voortkabbelt, groeit Kampala razendsnel.
De luchthaventaxi’s met hemelsblauwe en gele strepen rijden dag en nacht naar Kampala voor zo’n €14 (20 USD). Eens in de hoofdstad heb je verschillende opties. De personenbusjes van het openbare vervoer hebben wisselende tarieven, terwijl de motortaxi’s (boda boda) erg handig zijn als je een afspraak niet wilt missen.
Het Kampala Serena Hotel brengt vijfsterrenluxe met panAfrikaanse panache. Naast een congrescentrum vind je er verschillende restaurants en een wellness- en fitnessclub. Hotel Africana Kampala is een budgethotel met een uitstekende service aan de rand van de centrale businesshub.
In de centrale businesswijk van Kampala en de binnenstad van Entebbe vind je restaurants voor alle smaken, van Afrikaanse specialiteiten tot Belgische frieten. Faze2 serveert Indische, Chinese en westerse gerechten, terwijl Sam’s Restaurant ideaal is voor ontbijt, lunch en avondmaal.
De twee populairste nachtclubs van Kampala, Ange Noir/Ange Mystique en Club Silk, liggen op enkele honderden meters van elkaar in de industriezone van de stad.
Aan de rand van Kampala vind je de Kasubigraven van enkele Bugandakoningen, die vroeger over het gebied heersten. Zoek in Entebbe de rust op van de botanische tuin en geniet er van een meeneemlunch onder het dichte bladerdak, terwijl een briesje van over het Victoriameer verkoeling brengt.
Heb je voldoende tijd? Reis dan naar Jinja, 80 km ten oosten van Kampala, om er de bron van de Nijl te bezoeken. De reis geeft je ook de gelegenheid om iets van Oeganda te zien. Zo begrijp je meteen waarom Winston Churchill het “de parel van Afrika” noemde.
