Of all today’s hot-button issues, the environment is one of the most serious. We’re constantly told of the damage we humans are wreaking, so it’s good to hear about an organisation taking action. Fauna & Flora International’s aims include increasing local awareness of environmental issues, intervening directly through a number of on-the-ground projects, and influencing public policy. This long-established conservation society works all over the world but especially in Africa, where projects in Kenya, Liberia and central Africa are in full swing – mountain-gorilla conservation is just one example. MEET…

Dr Florence Isabirye Muranga, director of the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development in Uganda. The government-funded scheme has found a way to dry banana plantain, a staple food in many parts of Africa, to increase its shelf life and empower the farmers who grow it

What’s the overall vision of your project?
We’re trying to improve people’s lives through value addition. Most banana producers are peasants and don’t have the benefit of bargaining power in the markets – when it’s peak harvest season, you sell your bananas or throw them away. As a result, banana productivity never really goes up.

How exactly does it work?
The technology we’re deploying helps these peasants dry the bananas into powder form so they can sell value-added products. We’re also planning to offer storage facilities so they can bring their produce together and bargain collectively.

We’re looking at rolling out a nutritional feeding programme especially for rural schools, and ultimately hope to make it possible for farmers to export what has for a long time been a food for local consumption only.

How long does the banana flour stay edible?
The value-added bananas have an incredible shelf life. Instant banana flour can keep forever if one doesn’t have rats in the house, while other varieties can easily stay good for between six months and a year. So, apart from giving these poor farmers an opportunity to earn more money from their hard work, we’re giving them the security to ensure they can always put food on the table.

The Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC)
is a local non-government organisation committed to working for the equal rights of children with disabilities. The society, founded in 1987, operates in 13 districts and focuses on the social and medical rehabilitation of children with disabilities. Each year, it assists about 5,000 children through its community-based rehabilitation approach, which involves parents and family members in looking after the children using local resources – a clear case of charity beginning at home. www.usdc.or.ug

Le docteur Florence Isabirye Muranga, directrice de l’Initiative présidentielle de développement de l’industrie bananière en Ouganda. Ce programme fondé par le gouvernement a trouvé un moyen de sécher la banane plantain, nourriture de base de nombreux pays africains, afin d’augmenter sa durée de conservation et de donner plus de pouvoir à ses cultivateurs

Quel est l’objectif global de votre organisation?
Nous essayons d’améliorer la vie des gens grâce à une valeur ajoutée. La plupart des producteurs de bananes sont de simples paysans qui n’ont pas le pouvoir de négocier sur le marché – au moment le plus fort de la récolte, Vous vendez vos bananes ou bien vous les jetez. Le résultat, c’est que la productivité en matière de bananes n’augmente jamais vraiment.

Comment cela fonctionne-t-il exactement?
La technologie que nous employons aide les paysans à sécher les bananes sous forme de poudre, de façon à ce qu’ils puissent vendre des produits à valeur ajoutée. Nous projetons également de proposer des facilités de stockage afin qu’ils puissent rassembler leurs productions et négocier collectivement. Nous sommes en train développer un programme d’alimentation nutritive, en particulier dans les écoles rurales, afin de permettre aux agriculteurs d’exporter ce qui a toujours été destiné auparavant à une consommation locale.

Combien de temps la farine de banane reste-t-elle consommable?
Les bananes à valeur ajoutée ont une durée de conservation incroyable.
On peut conserver la farine de banane instantanée éternellement si l’on n’a pas de rats dans la maison, et d’autres variétés peuvent facilement rester consommables de six mois à un an. Ainsi, en plus de donner à ces agriculteurs pauvres l’opportunité de gagner plus d’argent en échange de leur difficile travail, nous leur offrons une sécurité alimentaire en leur permettant de toujours avoir de quoi se nourrir.

is een plaatselijke ngo die ijvert voor gelijke rechten voor kinderen met een handicap. De vereniging werd opgericht in 1987 en is actief in 13 districten. Ze houdt zich voornamelijk bezig met de sociale en medische rehabilitatie van kinderen met een handicap. Elk jaar begeleidt ze zo’n 5000 kinderen via een gemeenschapsaanpak. Van alle hangijzers is het milieu wel een van de heetste. Steeds opnieuw horen we over de schade die de mens het milieu toebrengt. Daarom doet het goed een bedrijf te zien dat die problemen direct aanpakt. Fauna & Flora International streeft naar lokale bewustwording en concrete oplossingen voor milieuproblemen. Daarbij verzoent de organisatie de menselijke behoeften met een ecovriendelijke levensstijl. Hun directe inbreng gebeurt via een aantal projecten ter plekke en het beïnvloeden van overheden. Ze zijn overal ter wereld actief, maar vooral in Afrika, met succesvolle projecten in Kenia, Liberia en Centraal-Afrika. Nog een kwaliteitsgarantie voor de eervolle bedoelingen van dit bedrijf ? Wat is het hoofddoel van uw project?
We proberen het leven van mensen te verbeteren door meerwaarde te creëren. De meeste bananenproducenten zijn boeren die geen onderhandelingspositie op de markt hebben. Tijdens de oogstpiek verkoop je je bananen op de markt of gooi je ze weg. Maar zo verbetert de bananenproductiviteit nooit.

Hoe gaat u precies tewerk?
Onze technologie helpt de boeren hun bananen gemalen te drogen, zodat ze producten met meerwaarde kunnen verkopen. We zullen ook opslagplaatsen voorzien zodat ze hun productie kunnen samenvoegen en samen kunnen onderhandelen. We werken aan een gezond voedingsprogramma, vooral voor landelijke scholen. Uiteindelijk willen we zorgen dat de boeren het product, dat lang enkel een lokaal voedingsmiddel was, kunnen exporteren.

Hoe lang blijft bananenbloem eetbaar?
De geoptimaliseerde bananen hebben een bijzonder lange houdbaarheid. Instant-bananenbloem kan je eindeloos bewaren als je geen ratten in huis hebt, terwijl andere variëteiten gemakkelijk zes maanden tot een jaar goed blijven. Zo verdienen deze arme boeren niet alleen meer geld met hun noeste arbeid, maar is ook de voedselveiligheid gegarandeerd. Ze zijn dus zeker dat ze altijd eten op tafel kunnen brengen.
