GETTING AROUND
A taxi from Conakry International Airport to the city centre takes about 30 minutes and costs around GNF 50,000 (€7). Most hotels can arrange taxi transfers – make sure you negotiate the price before you leave.
EAT OUT
One of the only establishments in Conakry to boast its own website, Le Damier (Centre-Ville, Marché Niger, tel. 30 411 786, www.damier-conakry.com) combines a French-style patisserie with a fine-dining restaurant under the guidance of chef André Chapon.
Le Jardin de Guinée (Coleah, tel. 30 461 279) is another quality restaurant, serving reliable lunches and evening meals. The food is worth the price.
DRINK UP
Set on the water’s edge at the harbour, the bar at Hôtel Petit Bateau (Kaloum, tel. 63 406 105, www.hotelpetitbateau.net) attracts a range of visitors and expats. Sit on the terrace and bring in the sunset with a glass of chilled Skol beer. La Fourchette Magique (Manquepas, tel. 30 400 082) is a short drive from the centre of town and well worth the journey – it offers live Guinean music, pool tables and hearty food.
CHECK OUT
Guinea’s National Museum (Kaloum, tel. 30 144 504) provides an introduction to the country’s culture, with a selection of artefacts on display. There are many opportunities for shopping within the capital – the streets near the airport and Marché Niger hold a bewildering array of shops selling African hardwood sculpture, local jewellery and bright traditional textiles.

Le Jardin de Guinée (Coleah, tél. 30 461 279) est un autre restaurant de qualité, qui sert des lunches que l’on peut manger les yeux fermés et des plats en soirée. La nourriture est d’un excellent rapport qualité/prix.
BOIRE UN VERRE
Le bar de l’hôtel Petit Bâteau (Kaloum, tél. 63 406 106) est idéal pour prendre un verre de bière Skol fraîche tout en assistant au spectacle du coucher de soleil. La Fourchette Magique (Manquepas, tél. 30 400 082) qui se trouve à une courte distance en voiture du centre de la ville, vaut le déplacement pour sa musique live guinéenne, ses tables de billard et sa cuisine savoureuse.
DÉCOUVERTE
Le Musée National de Guinée (Kaloum, tél. 30 415 060) constitue une introduction à la culture guinéenne, avec une sélection d’objets ethniques et de pièces historiques. Les rues aux alentours de l’aéroport et le Marché Niger offrent une impressionnante diversité de boutiques africaines.
