GETTING AROUND
Abidjan Airport isn’t far from the city centre and metered taxis wait outside the gate. A ride to Plateau, where most business hotels are located, costs between CFA 3,000 (€4,60) and CFA 6,000 (€9,10). You can negotiate a fixed rate or have the driver use his meter. Rates double after midnight.

EAT OUT
La Maison des Combattants (Avenue des Anciens Combattants, Plateau) is an open colonial-era building next to the war memorial with friendly staff and a good range of Ivorian food. At Maquis Langouste (Boulevard de Vridi, Vridi) you can watch the beautifully decorated traditional fishing boats casting their nets. The speciality is the local crayfish, which comes in mountainous portions.

DRINK UP
Fujibar (Boulevard Botreau-Roussel, Plateau) is a smart place for a drink not far from many of the city centre hotels – plus there’s often live music at weekends. The Ritz (Boulevard Delafosse, Treichville) is an upmarket nightclub where trendy young Ivorians dance to the latest pop tunes from across the globe.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
At night, the Nandjelet (opposite the cemetery, Blockosso) restaurant behind Hotel Ivoire boasts stunning views across the lagoon to the reflected neon lights of central Abidjan. Enjoy grilled fish, spicy chicken and fried plantains at the water’s edge. You get a good view of the city’s modern St Paul’s Cathedral with its giant cross from here. But to appreciate the remarkable stained-glass windows, the church (Avenue Jean-Paul II, Plateau) is best seen from the inside.

Fujibar (Boulevard Botreau-Roussel, Plateau) est un endroit ‘in’ pour boire un verre, non loin de la plupart des hôtels du centre. On peut de plus y écouter des concerts les week-ends. Le Ritz (Boulevard Delafosse, Treichville) est un nightclub haut de gamme, où les jeunes Ivoiriens dans le coup dansent au son des derniers tubes pop venus de toute le planète.

LES PLUS BEAUX ENDROITS DU RIVAGE
Le restaurant Nandjelet (en face du cimetière, Blockosso), derrière l’hôtel Ivoire, offre à la tombée du soir un fabuleux panorama de la lagune. Savourez le poisson grillé, le poulet épicé et les bananes plantains frites, au bord de l’eau. Vous aurez une bonne vue de la Cathédrale St Paul, édifice d’une grande modernité dans la ville (Avenue Jean-Paul II, Plateau) avec sa statue géante. Mais l’on ne peut réellement apprécier les remarquables vitraux qu’à l’intérieur de l’église.

GETTING AROUND
Roberts International Airport is 58km from Monrovia. Call ahead to your hotel to organise a ride into town, particularly if you’re arriving at night. You can expect to pay between LRD 1,905 (€20) and LRD 4,445 (€45) for airport pick-ups, depending on the type of car you choose. Although fares are cheap, Monrovia’s battered yellow taxis aren’t the best or safest way to get around town.

EAT OUT
Monrovia has become sushi central with two excellent Japanese-style restaurants – Living Room (Royal Hotel, Tubman Blvd, Sinkor, tel. (0)77 76925) and Barracuda Bar (Mamba Point Hotel, UN Drive, tel. (0)5 764764, mambapointhotel.biz). But at the end of the rainy season, plush Moroccan restaurant Casablanca (Broad Street, next to Ruby’s) feels cosier.

DRINK UP
If the weather holds, Golden Beach (Tubman Blvd, Sinkor) is a great venue for an early evening beer. Kick off your shoes and head for one of the tables in the sand. Otherwise a tried and tested favourite is the Mamba Point Hotel (UN Drive). Its three upmarket bars serve a good selection of drinks in friendly surroundings.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
CeCe Beach (across the bridge towards Hotel Africa) is one of the most developed yet relaxing waterside spots in the capital. But be warned: Monrovia’s beaches are notorious for powerful rip tides. Nana’s Lodge at Robertsport (three hours from Monrovia) is a five-star tented resort with a bar next door, and is ideally situated for a weekend of surfing.

La Chaumière (3469 Avenue Ngongo Lutete, Goimbe, tel. 99 994 3721) is a small but cosy restaurant housed in grass-roofed huts, giving it an exotic feel – the perfect spot for an intimate tête à tête. Café Mozart (2 Avenue Citronniers, Gombe, tel. 99 085 4236) is a centrally located restaurant offering both European and Congolese dishes and pastries, set up to provide training and jobs for girls who used to live on the streets.

DRINK UP
Chez Ntemba (Rond Point Forescom) is the city’s most popular nightclub, playing mainly Congolese music. If that’s too busy for you, Le 3615 (Boulevard du 30 Juin) plays a mix of Congolese and foreign music and has a terrace where you can while away your evening.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
Le Jardin d’Eden, about 50km from the city centre, is an exotic and picturesque waterside spot along the shores of N’sélé stream, a tributary of the Congo River. Make a day of it by joining a fishing or boating excursion and then stay the night in one of the waterfront bungalows. You can even go on a tour of the tributary up to where it joins the Congo River, keeping an eye out for life on the riverbanks. Those seeking out a secluded spot can cross to a small ‘lost’ island with a diminutive beach and relish the beauty of this pristine environment.

Flying over Africa late at night reveals a continent largely in darkness, littered only by flickers of faint firelights and several metropolises that have managed to find power at the end of the switch. It is an image that underlies Africa’s unnecessary power woes. What you won’t see in the dark below is an endless network of rivers – arteries that could pump lifeblood, if exploited.

The major link between water and power in Africa is that they’re needlessly lacking. Richard Fredland in his book Understanding Africa, argues that Africa’s rivers contain as much as 40% of the world’s hydroelectric potential, yet less than 5% of this is exploited. Saving isn’t enough, only about 20% of African households are wired to a grid, and per capita electricity consumption is only 515 kilowatt-hours, while the world average is 2326 kilowatt-hours per capita.

Sub-Saharan Africa has annual floods and droughts, and it is not uncommon for one to follow on shortly after the other. Carefully planned water management schemes could go a long way to providing water all year round. Currently 80.8% of large dams across Africa serve only one purpose – generally water supply to a handful of farms or industries – and only a smidgen of multi-purpose dams have hydroelectric power generating plants attached to them.

But dams alone aren’t going to solve Africa’s power woes. Building hydro plants will go a long way to ensuring Africa can light itself up, but appropriate management will need to follow. Uganda, for example, gets over 98% of its electricity from hydro and has an estimated electric power potential of about 5300MW. Unfortunately, only about 400MW of this is currently exploited, resulting in a critical shortage of electricity throughout the country, and sometimes water too.

The $500m (€317m) Bujagali hydropower project, which is currently dogged by financial troubles between the Ugandan government and the World Bank, is set to bring 250MW onboard later this year. Several more projects like this would help the country achieve the 2000MW it’ll need by 2025 to run its industries and homes, as well as providing the opportunity to manage hydro-electric dams to provide water and power supplies sustainably.

And then there’s the grid. In particular, the DRC’s power grid is in tatters, undermining the massive potential the central African nation has for generating enough power to light up the entire continent with energy to spare. Inga Grand, a 39,000 MW expansion to the hydroelectric power station on the Congo River at Inga Falls, could almost double Africa’s power output.

Joshua Ofedie, CEO of Ghana’s Volta River Authority (VRA) believes the DRC’s Inga Falls potential has been “significantly unused” and it is clear to see why governments, eager to find a solution to continent-wide energy crunch, are pro what appears to be a one-stop shop solution. The price tag is enormous, at $50bn (€32bn), and lead times to start construction may leave Africa with little choice but to industrialise by candle-light. According to the Congolese power utility, SNEL, Inga Grand is scheduled – a date that will surely change – for construction to begin in 2020, while reaching the Congo River’s full 150,000MW estimated potential is at least a couple of decades away.

Given this, experts believe smaller, cheaper and local isn’t only better, but necessary in the interim. Liberia turned a handful of Monrovia’s lights on in 2003, making use of a $100,000 (€63,413) deal in which the EU provided a diesel-generator and fuel. In 2006, as a symbolic gesture of their freedom, more of the capital’s lights were turned on, albeit only for a day, before the new emergency supply was dedicated to hospitals and a dozen or so streetlamps. Yet, according to the country’s power utility Liberia Electricity Corporation, Liberia has an economic hydro potential of around 1000MW. For a country of just over 3 million people, that’s not bad going.

Projects definitely don’t need to be big. Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania have proposed to build a 40 to 60MW dam at Rusumo Falls on the Kagera River, splitting the power equally. However, the project has met opposition with the World Bank reporting that about 3000 people would need to be resettled and the dam could increase the proliferation of waterborne diseases downstream, making it difficult for the East African nations to secure funding for the project. Similar ambitions by Angola, the world’s fastest growing economy in 2007, and its neighbour Namibia to build a hydroelectric plant at Epupa Falls on the Cunene River in northern Namibia, have been upset by reports that this could impact on the lives of the 25,000 Himba who live along the river.

So where does this all leave Africa? Africa almost has too many resources available, and perhaps because of this, it makes it difficult to identify where to start. Be that as it may, Africa’s potential for clean power is astonishing. In an environment of high oil prices and dwindling returns on investment, the African energy sector could be the best place to stash your extra cash. And if the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund are right in their outlooks, sub-Saharan Africa is set to grow by between 6.4 and 6.7% this year, meaning additional power will be immediately snapped up.

L’énergie de l’eau

Le survol de l’Afrique, tard dans la nuit, révèle un continent plongé dans les ténèbres, éclairé faiblement par les lueurs vacillantes de feux de bois et d’éclairages dans les quelques métropoles qui ont réussi à trouver de l’électricité au bout du fil. Cette image souligne les misères de l’Afrique en matière énergétique. Mais sous vos pieds, l’obscurité masque un réseau infini de fleuves, des artères qui pourraient insuffler de la vie dans ces contrées, à condition d’être exploitées.

Le principal lien entre l’eau et l’électricité en Afrique est que tous deux manquent cruellement. Richard Fredland dans son livre Understanding Africa, explique que les fleuves d’Afrique recèlent près de 40% du potentiel hydroélectrique mondial, et toutefois seulement 5% est exploité. Les réserves ne suffisent pas et pourtant seulement 20% des ménages africains sont raccordés à un réseau, et la consommation d’électricité par habitant se monte à quelque 515 kilowatts heure, en comparaison de la moyenne mondiale par habitant de 2 326 kilowatts heure.

Chaque année, l’Afrique sub-saharienne est submergée par des inondations et des sécheresses, les deux calamités alternant parfois en très peu de temps. Une planification minutieuse de la gestion de l’eau pourrait alimenter le pays en eau durant toute l’année. Bien entendu, les barrages à eux seuls ne vont pas résoudre les difficultés énergétiques de l’Afrique. La construction d’usines hydrauliques assurera à l’Afrique une autonomie en matière électrique, mais leur gestion devra également suivre. L’Ouganda, par exemple, reçoit près de 98% de son électricité d’origine hydraulique et sa production potentielle tourne autour de 5300MW. Malheureusement, à peine 400MW sont exploités à ce jour, débouchant sur une pénurie critique d’approvisionnement de courant dans le pays, et d’eau parfois aussi.

Le projet hydraulique de Bujagali, à hauteur de $500m (€317m), dont le financement est à l’heure actuelle à l’arrêt, suite aux dissensions entre le Gouvernement ougandais et la Banque Mondiale, est destiné à apporter 250MW dans les mois à venir. D’autres projets de ce type pourraient aider le pays à atteindre les 2 000MW dont il a besoin d’ici 2025 pour faire tourner ses industries et fournir ses foyers, tout en apportant une gestion durable.

Ensuite vient le réseau électrique. Le réseau de la RDC plus particulièrement est en décomposition, limitant l’énorme potentiel de cette nation du centre Afrique, qui dispose d’énergie en suffisance pour éclairer tout le continent, sans compter ses fantastiques réserves. Inga Grand, une extension de 39 000 MW de la station hydroélectrique basée sur le fleuve Congo aux chutes d’Inga, pourrait presque doubler la performance énergétique de toute l’Afrique.

Joshua Ofedie, CEO de la Compagnie du fleuve Volta au Ghana (VRA) croit que le potentiel des chutes d’Inga en RDC est resté “particulièrement inexploré” et il est clair que les gouvernements soucieux de trouver une solution au déficit énergétique qui mine le continent africain sont en faveur de ce qui apparaît comme une solution one-stop shop (magasin tout en un). Le prix cependant est exorbitant et se monte à $50Md (€32Md), et le temps d’attente avant de démarrer la construction ne pourrait laisser d’autre choix à l’Afrique que de s’industrialiser en s’éclairant à la bougie. Selon la société publique congolaise en charge de l’énergie, SNEL, le démarrage de la construction du projet Inga Grand est prévue – une date qui changera sûrement – en 2020, et le potentiel optimal du fleuve Congo, estimé à 150 000MW, ne pourrait être réalisé que quelques décennies plus tard.

Au vu de cette situation, les experts croient que des projets moins chers et plus locaux ne sont pas seulement une alternative mais une nécessité dans l’entre-temps. Le Liberia a tourné quelques interrupteurs à Monrovia en 2003, en utilisant les $100 000 (€63 413) résultant d’un accord avec l’UE, pour un générateur diesel et du pétrole. En 2006, comme geste symbolique de leur liberté, de nombreuses lumières furent allumées dans la capitale, même si ce n’était que pour une journée, avant que la fourniture énergétique ne soit à nouveau destinée à l’urgence dans les hôpitaux et à une douzaine de lampadaires pour l’éclairage public. Et toutefois, selon la compagnie publique électrique Electricity Corporation du Liberia, le pays dispose d’un haut potentiel hydroélectrique d’environ 1 000MW. Pour une contrée qui compte à peine plus de 3 millions d’habitants, ce n’est pas si mal.

Clairement, les projets ne doivent pas nécessairement voir grand. Le Rwanda, le Burundi et la Tanzanie ont proposé de construire un barrage de 40 à 60MW aux chutes de Rusumo sur le fleuve Kagera, répartissant la fourniture énergétique à part égale. Toutefois, le projet a rencontré l’opposition de la Banque Mondiale, confirmant que quelque 3000 personnes devraient être déplacées et que le barrage pourrait augmenter la prolifération de maladies, ce qui rend l’accès au financement nécessaire difficile pour ces nations est-africaines. Un ambitieux projet similaire en Angola, l’économie qui a connu la hausse la plus fulgurante dans le monde en 2007, prévoit conjointement avec la Namibie, une usine hydroélectrique aux chutes d’Epupa sur le fleuve Cunene, dans le nord de la Namibie. Suite à des rapports dénonçant l’impact de cette construction sur la vie de 25 000 Himba vivant le long du fleuve, l’opération a été contrecarrée.

Où en est dès lors l’Afrique au milieu de ces tergiversations ? L’Afrique dispose, à la limite, de trop de ressources, une situation qui rend sans doute la planification des projets plus complexe. Quoiqu’il en soit, le potentiel de l’Afrique pour la production d’énergies propres est étonnant. Dans un contexte de prix élevés du pétrole et de retours incertains sur les investissements, le secteur énergétique en Afrique pourrait s’avérer fructueux pour les investisseurs. Et si la Banque Mondiale et le Fonds Monétaire International ont raison, l’Afrique sub-Saharienne devrait connaître une croissance entre 6,4 et 6,7% cette année, avec en corollaire l’émergence immédiate de production d’énergie.

De kracht van water

In zijn boek Understanding Africa schrijft Richard Fredland dat hoewel de Afrikaanse rivieren maar liefst 40% van het hydro-elektrische potentieel ter wereld bevatten, er minder dan 5% van wordt benut. Besparen volstaat niet. Slechts zo’n 20% van de Afrikaanse gezinnen is op een netwerk aangesloten. Het elektriciteitsverbruik per hoofd bedraagt er niet meer dan 515 kW/u, terwijl het wereldgemiddelde rond de 2 326 kW/u per hoofd schommelt.

Dammen alleen zullen Afrika’s elektriciteitsproblemen niet oplossen. Waterkrachtcentrales zouden in Afrika het licht kunnen aandoen, maar dan moeten ze wel goed worden beheerd. Zo haalt Oeganda meer dan 98% van zijn elektriciteit uit water en heeft het een geschat elektriciteitspotentieel van ongeveer 5 300 MW. Helaas wordt daar momenteel slechts zo’n 400 MW van geëxploiteerd.

En dan is er het netwerk nog. Vooral het elektriciteitsnet van de DRC ligt in flarden, wat het enorme potentieel ondermijnt van deze Centraal-Afrikaanse staat om genoeg elektriciteit op te wekken om het hele continent te belichten, mét overschot! Inga Grand, een uitbreiding van 39 000 MW van de waterkrachtcentrale op de rivier de Congo in Inga Falls, zou Afrika’s stroomopbrengst bijna kunnen verdubbelen.

Afrika’s potentieel voor schone stroom is verbluffend. In een wereld van hoge olieprijzen en afnemende rendementen zou de Afrikaanse energiesector wel eens de beste plaats kunnen zijn om je spaargeld te beleggen. En als de Wereldbank en het Internationaal Monetair Fonds het bij het rechte eind hebben, zal Afrika bezuiden de Sahara dit jaar met 6,4 tot 6,7% groeien. Extra elektriciteit zal dus meer dan welkom zijn!

With his flamboyant outfits, extravagant spending and numerous hit records, Elton John needs no introduction. Officially the 49th best recording artist ever, Elton first found fame with his eponymous 1970 album. He went on to attain superstar status with classic LPs such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Although 1997’s ‘Candle in the Wind’ was the biggest-selling solo single of all time, many of Elton’s other hits have come from collaborations. Indeed he’s worked with such a diverse stable of talent as John Lennon, 2Pac and the 1970 England World Cup squad. He was knighted in 1998, for both his services to music and his tireless work for AIDS charities.

Folk singer Jessica Kilroy first picked up a guitar at just 13. Her big break came in 1999 when she appeared as a guest on The Heidi Show, and a year later four of her songs featured on the soundtrack for independent film Finding Out. She went on to release her first solo album Before Dawn in 2003. The album caught the attention of blues legends like Guy Davis and Skip Ewing who said her voice was “honest and pure, like nothing I’ve ever heard before”, and drew comparisons with the likes of Emmy Lou Harris. Four years on, she released her second album Big Dreams, a masterful fusion of folk, Americana and gospel. Since then she has performed with some of the biggest names in bluegrass, including Darrell Scott, John Lowell, Tom Chapin, Steam Powered Airplane, the Snake Handlers, the Wilders and Thomas Sneed. She is currently touring America.

Ethiopia is rapidly rising through the ranks as a destination with plenty of potential. Too long blighted by media portrayals of drought and famine, the country’s wealth of cultural and natural resources are emerging to place Ethiopia firmly on the tourism map. With Brussels Airlines now flying there as a codeshare with Ethiopian Airlines here’s our must do list:

1 SAVOUR…
…one of the country’s top attractions, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, which are well worth seeing whether you are a fan of religious architecture or not. Most of the churches, which are guarded by priests, are cut straight from the bedrock so their roofs are at ground level.

2 TUCK…
…into injera, the ubiquitous flatbread served with an array of local vegetable and meat dishes at Agelgil (old Villa Verde house in the Meskel Flower area, Addis Ababa tel. +251 11 4653299). This is one of the city’s more upmarket eateries boasting an authentic Ethiopian setting and often hosting live music performances.

3 SEE…
…Africa’s answer to the Grand Canyon – the Semien Mountains National Park (in the North) is jaw-droppingly awesome. From the snow-capped peak of Africa’s fourth highest mountain, the 4620m Ras Dashen, to the park’s dramatic gorges and a rare glimpse of the endangered Ethiopian wolf or the majestic Gelada baboon you cannot fail to be wowed.

4 TAKE…
…a coffee break at any number of restaurants or cafés dotted around the capital – try City Pastry on Bole Road. Ethiopia’s coffee ceremony is an integral part of their social and cultural life and is not something to be done in a hurry. The beans are roasted in front of you over a small charcoal stove before being crushed and stirred into a black clay coffee pot with boiling water.

5 GET…
…a sensory overload at Addis’ open-air merkato, one of the largest market’s in Africa. There is something for everyone here, but seek out the recycling market where you can watch old tyres being turned into sandals. It’s worth investing in a guide to show you round.

L’Éthiopie se démarque rapidement comme une destination à haut potentiel. Trop longtemps présenté par les médias comme un territoire terrassé par la sécheresse et la famine, le pays reprend aujourd’hui fermement sa place sur la carte touristique, en faisant redécouvrir la richesse de sa culture et de ses ressources naturelles. Et depuis les récents accords de partage de code entre Ethiopian Airlines et Brussels Airlines, voici notre liste incontournable des choses à voir et à faire pour ceux qui se rendent dans le pays :

1 SAVOUREZ…
…l’une des attractions majeures du pays, les églises creusées dans le roc de Lalibela qui valent vraiment le détour, que vous soyez amoureux ou pas d’architecture religieuse. La plupart des églises, gardées par des prêtres, sont taillées à même le roc, sous terre, de telle façon que leurs toits se trouvent au niveau du sol.

2 MORDEZ…

3 DÉCOUVREZ…
…la réplique africaine du Grand Canyon – le Parc National des Monts du Semien (dans le Nord), stupéfiant de beauté. Depuis les sommets enneigés de l’une des quatre plus hautes montagnes d’Afrique, le Ras Dashen culminant à 4620m, jusqu’aux gorges inouïes du parc, vous ne pourrez que vous ébahir ! …une pause-café dans l’un des nombreux restaurants ou cafés disséminés dans la capitale – essayez City Pastry dans Bole Road. La cérémonie du café en Éthiopie fait partie intégrante de la vie culturelle et sociale, et en l’occurrence elle ne doit pas se dérouler à la va-vite. Les grains sont grillés en face de vous sur un petit poêle de charbon de bois, avant d’être moulus et mélangés dans de l’eau bouillante, dans un pot à café en argile noir.

5 FAITES…
…le plein de sensations au marché extérieur d’Addis, l’un des plus grands de toute l’Afrique. Chacun y trouvera quelque chose à son goût, mais allez aussi jeter un coup d’œil du côté du marché du recyclage, où vous pourrez voir des pneus usagés transformés en sandales. Cela vaut la peine de réserver un guide pour vous faire faire le tour.

1 MAAK…
…kennis met een van de voornaamste attracties van Ethiopië, de in de rotsen uitgehouwen kerken van Lalibela, beslist de moeite waard, ongeacht of u al dan niet een liefhebber van religieuze kunst bent. De meeste kerken, die worden bewaakt door priesters, zijn rechtstreeks in de bodem uitgehouwen, zodat hun dak gelijk komt met de grond.

2 LAAT…

Hier blijft niemand onverschillig.

4 NEEM…
…een koffiepauze in een van de talloze restaurants of cafés in de hoofdstad – probeer City Pastry op Bole Road uit. De koffieceremonie maakt integraal deel uit van het Ethiopische sociale en culturele leven en is niet iets dat snel tussendoor gebeurt. De bonen worden speciaal voor u geroosterd op een kleine houtskoolkachel. Daarna worden ze geplet en in een koffiepot van zwarte klei gemengd met kokend water.

5 VERWEN…
…uw zintuigen op de ‘merkato’ in open lucht, een van de grootste markten van Afrika. Hier vindt iedereen zijn gading. Neem zeker ook eens een kijkje op de recyclagemarkt waar men bijvoorbeeld oude banden omvormt tot sandalen. Het is beslist de moeite waard om u te laten rondleiden door een gids.

The lodge – a partnership between local and international agencies – aims to protect the mountain gorilla’s habitat and benefit the local community. International flights arrive at Entebbe International Airport, 40km south of the capital. A taxi into town costs around UGX 50,000 (€20). There’s no public transport into the city. Alternatively, take a taxi to Entebbe for UGX 10,000 (€4), then a minibus into Kampala for less than €1.

DRINK UP
The refurbished Equator Bar (formerly the Rhino Pub at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Ternan Avenue) might have lost its noisy party atmosphere, but this has been replaced with a laid-back lounge setting ideal for a quiet drink. For a livelier pub experience, head down to Mateo’s Bar above the Nandos restaurant on Kampala Road.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
If you’ve got a day to spare, head out to Jinja (an hour’s drive from the city) and picnic above the world-famous Bujagali Falls. Alternatively, visit the Speke Resort in Munyonyo (tel: (0)414 227111, www.spekeresort.com) on the shores of Lake Victoria, where boat rides and fishing expeditions can be arranged. The resort also boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool, an equestrian centre and five-star accommodation.

Next time it rains, stop and think. Every brand of bottled water starts with rain, yet the story of each drop’s journey – through glaciers, rocks, springs or icebergs – fuels a booming market in Europe worth more than €25bn.

As a phenomenon, it’s both fascinating and bizarre. Fancy a glass of Cloud Juice? It’s rain water from a remote island near Tasmania. Or, for €50, indulge in a bottle of Bling H2O, studded with Swarovski crystals. In July of this year, three Evian bottles designed by Christian Lacroix raised close to $50,000 (€32,000) at a charity auction in the United States.

Are you shocked? Perhaps you shouldn’t be. Nearly 2,000 years ago the Romans imported naturally carbonated water from a spring in Germany – no doubt it was a luxury for the elite.

Nowadays, lavish marketing campaigns persuade us of each brand’s purity. Bottle design is also crucial. After all, once it’s in a glass, still water looks identical. “Detox”, “refresh”, “cleanse” and “revive” are favourite words with advertisers. Paying for water is a lifestyle choice, a way to cleanse our allegedly polluted bodies, but could you taste the difference in a blind tasting?

This lucrative market is shared by more than 3,000 brands and is growing fast. “It’s exploding,” says H2O expert Michael Mascha. “I’m starting to see a new brand every one or two weeks.” The multinationals are key players: Nestlé owns Perrier, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna and Vittel; Danone owns Evian and Volvic.

Mascha runs a website called Fine Waters (fiwww.newaters.com), which he describes as the voice for bottled water connoisseurs. He’s also written a book about the world’s best waters and developed a sliding scale to differentiate between bubble sizes. “It’s not a business, more a mission,” he explains.

How did he start? He used to be a wine aficionado, but six years ago doctors told him to stop drinking alcohol. As a result, he turned his attention to the other bottle on the table: “I refocused my epicurean curiosity on the water.”

He explains that Europe has a long tradition of drinking mineral water. The Italians consume the most, an average of 234ltr per year, mostly sparkling. Spain comes second, with a preference for still water. France lags just behind, preferring a bit of both, while in Poland sales of bottled water have been steadily increasing since the beginning of 2008.

Historically, most iconic brands in Europe draw their waters from natural springs, visited for centuries for their healing waters. In Belgium, the town of Spa in the Ardennes Mountains is a famous example – its name was then borrowed to describe any health ‘spa’.

On the southern shore of Lake Geneva, Évian-les-Bains is a luxurious spa resort and the source of the world’s leading brand of natural spring water. Evian still enjoys strong sales, but in Paris it faces stiff competition.

“Vittel, Badoit, San Pellegrino, Voss, Wattwiller, Finé and Chateldon are also popular,” says Guillaume Salmon from Colette, a chic department store on the fashionable rue Saint-Honoré. He should know: the store is famous for having a water bar in the basement. Opened in 1997, the menu at Colette lists about 70 brands, including waters from South Africa, Canada and the US. But it’s not the only business to turn a spotlight on exotic waters.

At Chez Théaux – a water bar and tearoom in Toulouse – you can choose water from the UK, Italy or Germany and even sample Chateldon, the first mineral water to be commercialised in France and reputedly drunk by Louis XIV. In Rome, meanwhile, there is the Aqua bar in the central railway station. Customers tap computers on each wall to take the ‘Aquatest’ – specially designed software that helps you choose your perfect water brand depending on age, gender, health and lifestyle.

In London, Claridge’s hotel also boasts a water menu. Upstairs, a double room costs at least €800. In the bar, 420 Volcanic water from New Zealand is roughly €25. “Every guest has an opinion and asks for a particular brand,” says bar manager Daniel Baernreuther. “Water is becoming like wine.”

It’s an analogy that holds up. Mineral water can express terroir, the unique balance of minerals and trace elements absorbed from its environment. For example, San Pellegrino is known for its sulphate content. According to Mascha, the most successful water brands exploit this connection. “They are the new winemakers,” he says.

Britain has now become the fastest growing market for bottled water in Europe, but it still lags behind in terms of volume – a measly 41ltr per person in 2007. British diners don’t follow the continental habit of ordering bottled water with their meals and it’s increasingly common for them to request free tap water.

There are also growing concerns about the environmental impact of bottling water. “They’re chopping up bits of iceberg for some brands,” says Darrell Burnham, water sommelier at the Monkbar Hotel in York, a city in the north of England.

In 2005, Burnham launched an imported water menu. Last year he had a change of heart: “You’re shipping water halfway around the world and it’s bottled in plastic.” The Monkbar now stocks 10 local and regional mineral waters.

From a moral perspective, UNICEF estimates that over one billion people worldwide have little or no access to safe water. In contrast, tap water is perfectly safe in the vast majority of European countries. What’s more, bottled water is between 240 and 10,000 times more expensive, according to statistics from the National Resources Defence Council.

Yet still the market grows with relentless momentum. In a recent campaign, Volvic pledged that for every litre of water sold, it will create 10ltr of clean drinking water in Africa by building and improving wells.

It’s a clever gesture – and a sign of the times.

C’est un phénomène à la fois fascinant et bizarre. Désirezvous un verre de Jus de Nuage ? Ou c’est de l’eau de pluie d’une île déserte près de la Tasmanie. Ou encore, pour €50, faitesvous plaisir avec une bouteille de Bling H2O en verre givré, avec une déco de cristal Swarovski. En juillet de cette année, trois bouteilles d’Evian conçues par Christian Lacroix ont permis de récolter près de $50 000 (€32 000) lors d’une vente aux enchères caritative aux Etats-Unis.

Choqué ? Il n’y a aucune raison. Il y a environ 2,000 ans d’ici, les Romains importaient une eau naturellement carbogazeuse d’une source en Allemagne – il va sans dire que c’était un luxe réservé à l’élite.

Aujourd’hui, les campagnes de marketing bien ciblées nous persuadent de la pureté des marques. Le design des bouteilles est également crucial. Après tout, lorsqu’elle est dans le verre, rien ne ressemble plus à une eau qu’une autre eau. “Élimine les toxines”, “rafraîchissante”, “purifie” et “revivifie” font partie des mots favoris des publicitaires. Payer pour l’eau est un choix de style de vie, une façon de nettoyer nos corps impurs, mais pourriez-vous faire la différence lors d’un ‘test à l’aveugle’ ?

Plus de 3 000 marques se partagent ce marché lucratif en rapide évolution. “C’est une réelle explosion,” dit Michael Mascha, expert chez H2O. “Chaque semaine ou deux semaines, je vois l’arrivée d’une nouvelle marque.” Les multinationales sont des acteurs clés : Nestlé détient Perrier, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna et Vittel ; Danone est propriétaire d’Evian et de Volvic.

Mascha gère un site web appelé Fine Waters (finewaters. com), qu’il décrit comme étant la voix des connaisseurs d’eaux. Il a également écrit un livre sur les meilleures eaux dans le monde et créé une échelle pour différencier la taille des bulles. “Ce n’est pas un business, mais une mission,” explique-t-il.

Comment tout cela a-t-il commencé ? Il était un amateur de vins, mais il y a six ans, les médecins lui ont interdit l’alcool. Il s’est donc tourné vers l’autre bouteille de la table : “J’ai recentré ma curiosité d’épicurien sur l’eau.”

Il explique que l’Europe a une longue tradition de dégustation d’eau minérale. Les Italiens sont les plus gros consommateurs, avec une moyenne de 234L par an, particulièrement pétillante. L’Espagne suit, avec une préférence pour l’eau plate. La France arrive juste derrière, avec une préférence non marquée pour l’une ou l’autre, tandis que les ventes en Pologne d’eau en bouteille ont fortement augmenté depuis le début de 2008.

Historiquement, la plupart des grandes marques en Europe collectent leurs eaux de sources naturelles, fréquentées depuis des siècles pour leurs valeurs curatives. En Belgique, la ville de Spa dans les Ardennes en est un célèbre exemple – son nom a ensuite été repris pour désigner n’importe quel ‘spa’.

Sur la rive sud du lac de Genève, Évian-les-Bains est une luxueuse station thermale et la source naturelle la plus connue du monde. Evian se positionne encore bien dans les ventes, mais à Paris la marque doit faire face à une forte compétition.

Il sait de quoi il parle : le magasin est connu pour son bar à eaux dans le sous-sol. Ouvert en 1997, le bar de Colette reprend environ 70 marques, dont des eaux d’Afrique du Sud, du Canada et des USA. Mais ce n’est pas la seule enseigne qui prône les eaux venues d’ailleurs.

Chez Théaux – un bar à eaux et un salon de thé à Toulouse – vous pouvez choisir de l’eau de Grande-Bretagne, d’Italie ou d’Allemagne et même des échantillons de Chateldon, la première eau minérale à avoir été commercialisée en France et réputée pour être bue par Louis XIV. À Rome, on trouve le bar Aqua dans la gare centrale. Les clients peuvent allumer des ordinateurs sur chaque mur pour faire l’‘Aquatest’ – un logiciel spécialement conçu pour vous aider à choisir la marque d’eau qui vous va en fonction de votre âge, votre genre, votre santé et votre style de vie.

À Londres, l’hôtel Claridge propose également une carte des eaux. À l’étage, une chambre double coûte au moins €800.

Au bar, 420 eaux volcaniques de Nouvelle-Zélande reviennent à environ €25 la bouteille. “Chaque client a une préférence et demande une marque particulière,” confie le responsable du bar Daniel Baernreuther. “L’eau devient un produit similaire au vin.”

Et l’analogie fonctionne. L’eau minérale peut être l’expression d’un terroir, l’équilibre unique entre les éléments minéraux absorbés par son environnement. Par exemple, la San Pellegrino est réputée pour ses sulfates. D’après Mascha, les marques d’eau qui réussissent exploitent cette connexion. “Ils sont les nouveaux vignerons,” dit-il.

La Grande-Bretagne est devenue à l’heure actuelle le marché qui connaît la croissance la plus rapide pour l’eau en bouteille en Europe, mais elle se situe en bas du classement en termes de volume – un tout petit 41L par personne en 2007. Les convives britanniques ne partagent pas la même habitude que les continentaux, qui commandent de l’eau en bouteille avec leur repas, plus couramment ils demandent de l’eau du robinet.

L’impact environnemental fait également partie des questions qui concernent l’eau en bouteille.

“Pour certaines marques, ils découpent des parties d’icebergs,” confie Darrell Burnham, sommelier, spécialiste des eaux à l’hôtel Monkbar de York, une ville du nord de l’Angleterre.

En 2005, Burnham a lancé une importante carte des eaux. L’année dernière il a changé d’optique : “Vous faites venir de l’eau des quatre coins du globe qui sont embouteillées dans du plastique.” Le Monkbar aujourd’hui stocke 10 marques d’eau minérales locales et régionales.

D’un point de vue moral, l’UNICEF estime que plus d’un milliard de personnes sur la planète ont peu ou pas d’accès à l’eau potable. À l’inverse, l’eau du robinet est parfaitement potable dans la grande majorité des pays européens. Qui plus est, l’eau en bouteille coûte entre 240 et 10 000 fois plus cher, d’après les statistiques du National Resources Defence Council.

Et toutefois le marché évolue sans relâche. Dans une campagne récente, Volvic a mis en place un système de refinancement selon lequel pour chaque litre d’eau vendu, 10L d’eaux potables seront créés en Afrique, grâce à la construction et à la modernisation des puits.

Un geste intelligent et un signe des temps.

Deze winstgevende en snelgroeiende markt telt meer dan 3.000 merken. “Ze barst uit haar voegen”, vertelt deskundige Michael Mascha, die een website (www.finewaters.com) voor kenners van flessenwater beheert. “Om de week of twee zie ik wel een nieuw merk verschijnen.” En multinationals spelen daarin de hoofdrol: Nestlé heeft Perrier, San Pellegrino, Acqua Panna en Vittel in handen, Danone bezit Evian en Volvic.

Hij legt uit dat Europeanen al heel lang mineraalwater drinken. Vooral Italianen zijn heel gulzig, met een gemiddelde van 234 liter per jaar, meestal bruisend. Spanje staat op de tweede plaats, met een voorkeur voor plat water. Daarna volgt Frankrijk, dat van beide varianten houdt, terwijl de verkoop van flessenwater in Polen sinds het begin van 2008 gestaag stijgt.

Vroeger al haalden de bekendste Europese merken hun water uit natuurlijke bronnen, die al eeuwenlang worden bezocht voor hun heilzame water. In België is het Ardeense stadje Spa een mooi voorbeeld. De naam staat in andere talen zelfs synoniem voor ‘kuuroord’.

Maar het verhaal heeft ook een keerzijde … UNICEF schat dat meer dan een miljard mensen wereldwijd weinig tot geen toegang hebben tot drinkbaar water. Terwijl kraantjeswater in de meeste Europese landen perfect veilig is … Bovendien is flessenwater volgens de statistieken van de National Resources Defence Council maar liefst 240 tot 10.000 keer duurder!

One of the world’s fastest growing sports has hit the shores of Africa. Josh Collings caught up with some of the key players behind Kenya’s kitesurfing scene

It may be hard to believe as you fly in to Nairobi, but Kenya’s land-locked capital is emerging as a potential source of some of Africa’s new breed of watersport champions.

As the memories of this year’s Beijing Olympics begin to fade, the inspiration of those who took part in the Games still fills many Africans with dreams of sporting success. Nairobi residents Nassan Njira, 29, and Tsuma Ndemi, 30, are now on the threshold of their careers in the world’s fastest growing water sport: kitesurfing.

Kenya’s eastern coast is blessed with reliable trade winds, and these seasonal movements of air have given the country some ideal conditions for water sports, particularly kitesurfing. It’s a thrilling experience for those who dare to stand on a board, riding the waves as they’re pulled along by a waterproof kite sailing above them.

Now, after several years of development during which the participation of Kenya’s international community has helped promote kitesurfing in the country, this exciting sport is ready to boom on the Mombasa coastline.

“For a while now, I have been teaching a group of Kenyans to kite. They’re the first and they’re really keen and talented,” says Fleur Van Den Driest, 29, a leading ider and teacher at Kenya’s Prosurf Extreme. “A lot of Nairobi-based guys are coming down and joining now and I’m really chuffed because there were only a few Kenyans before. The sport is growing big-time. It’s a great feeling and I can’t wait to see how good the African competitors will be.”

Njira and Ndemi are both talented riders hoping for a big future. They, like most others, have been drawn into kitesurfing by the extreme sport’s sense of adventure. “It’s really cool, just so much fun,” says Njira. “I’m hoping to do it for a long time.”

Van Den Driest, originally from Holland, has been living and working in Mombasa for the past seven years and is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading kitesurfers as well as a top teacher. She is excited at the prospects for young Kenyans now joining the sport. This year saw several breakthroughs as kitesurfing made its mark on the world sporting stage.

The most important, for Kenya, was the emergence of 18-year-old local rider Xan Woods. Woods, a huge talent and a natural athlete, became the first Kenyan to attract sponsorship from North Kiteboarding, an achievement that will open doors for others. So far, Kenyans who have the talent but not the money have been struggling to show what they can do.

the extreme nature of the sport

Van Den Driest explains: “Local riders have difficulty breaking into the sport because it is quite expensive and it’s usually the more privileged who take it up. A lot of youngsters also go to other countries for their higher education, so in this country we always have an ‘age gap’, a group of people who are missing, between the ages of 16 and 24. They come back once they’ve been to university and take it up again. But really, to be professional, they need to be riding from an earlier age. That’s why the changes now, with sponsorship and more of the young locals taking it up seriously, are so important.”

Each February, ProSurf funds and hosts an international event called the MEAK (Medical and Educational Aid to Kenya) Charity Kitesurf Cup on Nyali Beach. The event runs for two weeks and attracts professionals and amateurs from all over the world, drawn to Kenya by the competition, the excellent kitesurfing conditions and the very special lifestyle that goes with it.

“We do the Cup every year,” says Van Den Driest. “The organisation brings medical and educational aid to Africa. There are cash prizes, sponsored by Prosurf, but the winners usually donate their prizes to a charity of their choice. It’s a really big event. A lot of people – local riders, international ones and professionals – come back every year for the competition and the parties.

“There are about 20 good Kenyan riders and we’ve divided them into amateurs and professionals. Some are as good as the international pros, so they really deserve to be recognised as such. There aren’t a lot of riders from other parts of Africa, but we did have one South African. We also get guys from Cyprus, Dubai, France, Belgium and the UK.

“We have a standard race and then a slider, which is like a rail, and a small jump called a kicker. And we’ve got a big-air and a freestyle competition. In the evening the contestants go fire-kiting – they have this big raft in the sea that’s on fire and they have to jump over it! That’s always great fun to watch.”

ProSurf isn’t the only place to organise events. Van Den Driest adds: “The school in Diani also has a freestyle competition, a two-day event, but that’s more of a regular competition. During the year, we do moonlight kiting with glow-sticks, which is a lot of fun. There are guys in fancy dress, some of them cross-dressing… it can be crazy!

“The Cup is definitely a big event in Kenya, especially this time because we had such a rough start to the year with the election crisis. That meant most tourists stayed put in Mombasa. We had all the local TV stations here for the competition and there was coverage by all the national newspapers.”

The 2008 Cup was such a success that it helped lift the mood after the elections. In recognition, the event was given an award by the Ministry of Tourism. “It was our biggest event ever!” says Van Den Driest. “Now we try to keep the spirit alive with monthly events, including barbecues on the beach.”

With Kenya pioneering the kitesurfing scene in Africa, it surely won’t be long before beaches elsewhere – especially along West Africa’s coastline where surfing already has a dedicated following – are dotted with a kaleidoscope of colourful kites pulling riders across the waves.

Le vent et les vagues

Cela pourrait sembler difficile à croire lorsque vous atterrissez à Nairobi. La capitale enclavée du Kenya est en train d’émerger en Afrique, comme le lieu potentiel d’une nouvelle génération de champions de sports nautiques.

Alors que le souvenir des Jeux Olympiques de Pékin commence à se dissiper, les sportifs qui y ont participé, eux, continuent à inspirer les Africains et à leur insuffler des rêves de réussite sportive. Nassan Njira, 29 ans et Tsuma Ndemi, 30 ans, tous deux résidants de Nairobi, sont aujourd’hui au seuil de leur carrière dans l’univers du sport nautique qui connaît aujourd’hui l’expansion la plus rapide : le kitesurfing.

La côte Est du Kenya est touchée par des vents alizés d’un flot régulier, et ces mouvements d’air saisonniers ont doté le pays de conditions idéales pour les sports nautiques, et plus particulièrement le kitesurfing. C’est une aventure exaltante pour ceux qui osent se tenir sur une planche et chevaucher les vagues tirés par un cerf-volant (kite), qui plane au-dessus d’eux.

Aujourd’hui, après quelques années de développement grâce notamment à la participation de la communauté internationale, le Kenya a réussi à promouvoir le kitesurfing, et ce sport excitant connaît un boom sur le littoral de Mombasa.

“Cela fait un petit temps maintenant que j’entraîne un groupe de Kenyans au kite. Ils sont les premiers, ils sont volontaires et ils ont vraiment un talent fou,” explique Fleur Van Den Driest, 29 ans, une pilote de premier ordre et une instructrice de Prosurf Extreme, au Kenya. “Beaucoup de sportifs basés à Nairobi viennent se joindre au groupe et c’est très encourageant parce qu’auparavant, il n’y avait que peu de Kenyans. Ce sport prend vraiment d’importantes proportions. C’est un sentiment fantastique et je suis impatiente de voir comment les concurrents africains se conduiront.”

Njira et Ndemi sont tous deux des pratiquants pilotes talentueux entrevoyant un grand futur. Comme beaucoup d’autres, ils ont été attirés par le kitesurfing parce qu’ils partageaient la passion des sports extrêmes. “C’est vraiment génial, c’est tellement amusant,” confie Njira. “J’espère pouvoir continuer à pratiquer cette activité encore longtemps.”

Van Den Driest, originaire de Hollande, a vécu et travaillé à Mombasa au cours des sept dernières années et elle est largement regardée comme l’une des kitesurfeuses les plus performantes du pays et comme une instructrice hors pair. L’idée que des jeunes Kenyans rejoignent ce sport la séduit énormément. Cette année, on a observé plusieurs percées dans le monde du kitesurfing, sur la scène du sport internationale.

L’événement le plus marquant pour le Kenya fut la montée du rider local de 18 ans Xan Woods. Le très talentueux Woods, un athlète né, est le premier Kenyan à avoir récolté du sponsoring de North Kiteboarding, une consécration qui ouvrira des portes pour les autres. Jusqu’à présent, les Kenyans qui avaient les compétences mais pas l’argent se sont battus pour montrer de quoi ils étaient capables.

Van Den Driest explique : “Les pilotes locaux percent difficilement dans ce sport parce que c’est relativement cher et ce sont généralement les plus privilégiés qui occupent le terrain. Un grand nombre de jeunes quittent également le pays pour aller étudier dans d’autres contrées, nous rencontrons donc fréquemment un ‘fossé des âges’, un groupe de gens qui manquent entre 16 et 24 ans. Ils rentrent dès qu’ils ont leur diplôme universitaire en poche et ils reprennent l’activité. Mais pour être de vrais professionnels, ils doivent pratiquer depuis leur plus jeune âge. C’est pourquoi les changements actuels, caractérisés par le sponsoring et un plus grand nombre de jeunes qui s’engagent sérieusement, sont si importants.”

Chaque mois de février, ProSurf finance et accueille un événement international appelé le MEAK (Aide médicale et à l’éducation au Kenya), Coupe caritative de Kitesurf sur la plage de Nyali. La compétition se déroule durant deux semaines et attire autant des professionnels que des amateurs venus des quatre coins du monde, attirés au Kenya par la compétition, les excellentes conditions de kitesurfing et le style de vie très spécial qui l’entoure.

“Nous participons à la Coupe chaque année” dit Van Den Driest. “L’organisation apporte une aide médicale et éducative en Afrique. Il y a des prix en argent liquide, sponsorisés par Prosurf, mais les gagnants font généralement don de leur prix à une association caritative de leur choix. C’est vraiment un gros événement.
