GETTING AROUND
There are a number of transport options from the airport, which is 4km from the city centre. For the more adventurous there are the local public taxis (candongeiro), which cost around 50 kwanza (€0.50). A meter taxi service (Macon Taxis) charges about 140 kwanza (€1.30) per kilometre.
EAT OUT
Pimm’s (Rua Garcia de Resende) is one of Luanda’s finest restaurants. Make a reservation to be sure of a table. It’s also a good idea to book ahead at Tambarino (23 Avenue Amilcar Cabral), which serves Portuguese cuisine during the week and a typical Angolan buffet on Saturdays.
DRINK UP
Caribe (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda) is where cool Luandans hang out at night. Overlooking the beach, it’s the perfect place for a sundowner, but once you’ve chilled out you’ll be lured to the pumping dance floor. Situated right on the beach, Coconuts (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda) is another favorite drinking hole and a good spot to enjoy an excellent range of cocktails with good company.
CHECK OUT
Visit the open-air Benfica Handcrafts Market just south of the city (off Rua da Samba), which sells everything from paintings and sculptures to jewellery and clothing. Nearby Museo da Esclavatura (Slave Museum) is a sad but historic place. Angola was one of the major ports through which millions of Africans were shipped out as slaves. The museum displays photographs and memorabilia from the era.

Pas pour le voyageur soucieux de son budget, Pimm’s (Rua Garcia de Resende) est l’un des plus fins restaurants de Luanda. Réserver s’impose si vous voulez être sûr d’avoir une table. C’est également une bonne idée de réserver à l’avance chez Tambarino (23 Avenue Amilcar Cabral), qui sert de la cuisine portugaise durant la semaine, et un buffet typique angolais le samedi midi. Fermé le dimanche.

Caribe (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda) est l’endroit où les Luandais cool passent la soirée. Après vous être rafraîchis, vous vous précipiterez sur la piste de danse. Coconuts (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda) est un autre bar apprécié et un bon endroit où savourer une excellente gamme de cocktails en bonne compagnie.
DÉCOUVERTE
Visitez en plein air le Marché Benfica de l’artisanat, au sud de la ville (près de Rua da Samba) qui vend tout depuis des peintures et des sculptures jusqu’à de la joaillerie et des vêtements. Le Museo da Esclavatura (Musée de l’esclavage) est un lieu empli de tristesse mais d’une valeur historique incontestable. L’Angola fut l’un des principaux ports via lequel des millions d’Africains ont transité comme esclaves. Le musée expose des photographies et des souvenirs de cette époque.

Pimm’s (Rua Garcia de Resende) is een van de beste restaurants in Luanda. Best reserveren om zeker te zijn. Ook bij Tambarino (Avenue Amilcar Cabral 23) reserveer je beter. Tijdens de week eet je er Portugees, op zaterdag is er een typisch Angolees lunchbuffet.

Caribe (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda). De bar met zicht op het strand is de gedroomde plaats om de zonsondergang te bewonderen. Maar daarna lonkt de kolkende dansvloer. Ook strandbar Coconuts (Avenue Mortala Mohamed, Ilha de Luanda) is erg populair. Je geniet er van een uitstekend assortiment cocktails in goed gezelschap.
AANRADER
Bezoek de Benfica handwerkmarkt even bezuiden de stad (aan de Rua da Samba). Op deze openluchtmarkt koop je alles van schilderijen en beelden tot juwelen en kleding. Het nabijgelegen Museo da Esclavatura (Slavenmuseum) is een tragische, maar historische locatie. Angola was een van de grootste havens van waaruit miljoenen Afrikanen als slaven werden verscheept. Het museum heeft foto’s en memorabilia uit die tijd.
