GETTING AROUND
Dakar airport is 15km from the centre of town, and a taxi should cost around CFA 4,000 (€6), including luggage and some hard bargaining. The best thing to do is to call your hotel in advance and arrange for a driver to pick you up.
EAT OUT
Le Relais Sportif (Corniche Ouest, between Magic Land and Terrou-Bi casino) is a low-key seaside terrace offering brilliant views and serving the freshest fish cooked on a grill. For delicious Ethiopian cuisine, make your way to Lalibela (Rue A x Road 3, Point E). Its rooftop terrace makes it a popular dining spot.
DRINK UP
For well-kept gardens and a laid back alfresco restaurant/bar, Le Bideew (the French Institute, 89 Rue Joseph T. Gomis, Plateau) is hard to beat. Come here to mingle with artists, locals and ex-pats in a relaxed atmosphere. Pen’Art Jazz Club (10 Boulevard du Sud, Point E), a small smoky jazz hole, has the country’s best live bands playing throughout the week. The music starts around midnight.
BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
Just 5km from the centre of Dakar, Gorée Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and former slave shipment island with stunning colonial houses crumbling into the ocean. Boats depart from Dakar harbour roughly every two hours. But for something a bit more contemporary, check out Koulgraoul (at l’Océanium, Corniche Est). Held on the first Saturday of every month, this cool club night takes place in the courtyard of a watersports center, right on the ocean.

Que diriez-vous de délicieux plats éthiopiens ? Allez donc chez Lalibela (Rue A x Road 3, Point E), un restaurant fort apprécié aussi pour sa terrasse sur le toit.

Venez ici pour vous mélanger avec des artistes, des locaux et des expatriés dans une atmosphère détendue. LES PLUS BEAUX ENDROITS DU RIVAGE
A cinq kilomètres du centre de Dakar, l’île de Gorée, anciennement centre d’embarquement des esclaves, est un site classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. De somptueuses maisons de style colonial s’effondrent progressivement dans l’océan. Presque toutes les deux heures des bateaux partent du port de Dakar. Pour une aventure un peu plus contemporaine, découvrez Koulgraoul (à l’Océanium, Corniche Est). Situé dans la cour d’un centre de sports nautiques, face à l’océan, ce club décontracté ouvre chaque premier samedi du mois.

Voor mooie tuinen en een ontspannen restaurant/ café in de openlucht moet je in Le Bideew (in het Franse Instituut, Rue Joseph T. Gomis 89, Plateau) zijn. Pen’Art Jazz Club (Boulevard du Sud 10, Point E) is een klein, rokerig jazzhol waar de beste livebands uit het land de hele week lang komen spelen.
HET BESTE AAN HET WATER
Vijf kilometer van het centrum van Dakar ligt het eiland Gorée, dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO prijkt en waar vroeger veel slaven werden ingescheept. Prachtige koloniale huizen staan hier met hun voeten in de oceaan. Ongeveer om de twee uur vertrekken er boten vanuit de haven van Dakar. Voor iets moderners zak je best af naar Koulgraoul (in l’Océanium, CornicheEst). Deze coole fuif wordt elke eerste zaterdag van de maand georganiseerd op de binnenplaats van een rustig watersportcentrum.
