Luanda

Population (Liberia) 3,441,790
Currency Liberian dollar
Average temp. (Jul-Aug) 25ºC

Old and new

With new bars and restaurants springing up around town, we have our eye on Tides, a Mamba Point bar with a great decking area that’s set to open this year. And don’t miss out on staples such as the laid-back Golden Beach (near the UN building in Sinkor), the Royal Hotel’s sushi bar (Tubman Boulevard), with its excellent spicy tuna sashimi salad, and Diana’s (Center Street), which has been serving hamburgers since the 1970s.

Life through a lens

Filmmakers have been flocking to Liberia’s shores lately. Some productions, such as the controversial Vice Guide to Liberia, haven’t gone down well with locals or expats, but there are a few films set in post-conflict Liberia worth seeing: Sliding Liberia, a surf documentary filmed shortly after the end of the war; the award-winning Pray the Devil Back to Hell, narrated by Angélique Kidjo; and Iron Ladies of Liberia, which goes behind the scenes with president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Chill-out zones

Need to chill out and relax? A weekend in Robertsport, 50km north, might be the remedy, where you can lay your head at Nana’s Lodge, with luxury tents suspended above the beach. But if you have to stay near town, treat yourself to an afternoon by the pool at the Kendeja Resort, or try a yoga session at Ocean View Apartments in Sinkor (Tuesdays and Thursdays).

Way to go

Robertsfield International Airport is 58km east of Monrovia. Payment in US dollars of between $50 (€46) and $80 (€73) is expected for the 90-minute taxi ride into town. Arranging a pick-up in advance is recommended, particularly at night – your hotel should be able to suggest a reliable driver.

Zalig ontspannen

Population (Cameroon): 18,468,000
Currency: CFA franc
Average temp. (Jul-Aug): 25ºC
Country code for Ivory Coast: +237

GETTING AROUND
Douala International Airport is 10km from the city and taxis charge CFA 3,000 (€4.50) in the day and CFA 4,000 (€6) at night to take you into town. First-time visitors are best booking an airport pick-up through their hotel.

EAT OUT
La Fourchette (Rue Franqueville, Akwa) is a popular restaurant, offering Western and African dishes at very reasonable prices. Diners after good local cuisine will not be disappointed with the White House restaurant (located behind SOCAR in Akwa), which also has a good wine list.

DRINK UP
The bar/restaurant 4ème Protocole (Boulevard de la Liberté) is a good spot to watch the rest of Akwa quarter go by. The nightclub has hosted international musicians such as Lucky Dube and Stevie Wonder. Another popular spot is Safari Nightclub (Rue de la Molte Piquet) in the Bonanjo neighbourhood, while Maxim’s Club (Rond Point Deido), located in one of the busiest parts of Douala, is open 24 hours and is a good meeting point.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
The coastal town of Limbe is one of Cameroon’s most popular beachside resorts. About an hour’s drive from Douala, it‘s a picturesque bay with dramatic black sand beaches set against the backdrop of a major mountain region – on a good day you can see Mount Cameroon. If you tire of beachside activities then there’s also a wildlife centre, botanical gardens and at Sembe Beach you can even try horse riding.

Population (The Gambia): 1,735,000
Currency: Dalasi
Average temp. (Jul-Aug): 27ºC
Country code for Ivory Coast: +220

GETTING AROUND
Banjul has a simple taxi payment system for tourists, which works out more expensive than the everyday yellow taxis but saves a lot of hassle. Green tourist taxis will take you from the airport to the main hotel/beach centre 15km away. Prices are printed on a board outside the airport, but check with the driver before you set off.

EAT OUT
The Sand Plover bar and restaurant (off Old Cape Road, Cape Point) is ideally positioned right on the beach. Hannah, the indomitable owner of this informal bar, serves cold beer, fresh juices and good food. If your taste buds are craving something a little different, then The Clay Oven (off Atlantic Road, Fajara) is the place to head for top-end Indian food. It’s a stylish restaurant renowned for its friendly service.

DRINK UP
Unwind from the heat of the day at Leybato (off Atlantic Road, Fajara), a relaxing guesthouse with a friendly bar. Set right on the beach, it’s the perfect spot to stretch out in one of the hammocks and watch the waves roll in from the Atlantic. At the Aquarius nightclub (near the Hotel Senegambia, Kololo) you need to dress to impress – think glitzy African nightlife, international beats and a mixed crowd of young partygoers.

BEST WATERSIDE SPOT
For jet-skiing, parascending and boat rides, contact the Gambia Watersports Centre at Denton Beach Resort (Denton Bridge). Windsurfing and canoeing are available at the Sunbeach Hotel’s watersports centre (Kofi Annan Street, Bakau).

The Sand Plover (vlakbij Old Cape Road, Cape Point). The Clay Oven (vlakbij Atlantic Road, Fajara).

Leybato (vlakbij Atlantic Road, Fajara).
